QUESTION:
I have a ceiling fan that needs to be replaced on a 6 foot down rod in a vaulted ceiling of 20 feet. Can this be done without accessing the top of the ceiling? I can reach the actual fan, but not the small medallion that covers the hookup. Also, do you know of any light kits that will fit old SMC model 4 blade, 4 light ceiling fans?

ANSWER:
In most cases, you cannot install a ceiling fan without removing the downrod from the canopy. The wires run all the way from the motor up through the downrod to the junction box. Furthermore, downrods are not the same between different brands and models of ceiling fans, so in most cases, you will not be able to use your existing downrod anyways.
