QUESTION: How can I convert a direct vent fireplace to something appropriate for vented gas log? I will buy from your company once we figure out how to convert. thank you
ANSWER: Vented gas logs can only be installed in wood burning fireplaces. They burn very much like real wood and produce byproducts that must be vented out through a vertical chimney. Unfortunately, you cannot use ANY gas logs in a direct vent fireplace other than those that came with it. If you want to burn vented gas logs, your only choice is to remove the entire fireplace and replace it with a wood burning fireplace and vertical chimney system.
Direct vent fireplaces operate in a VERY controlled air-tight environment that is designed and safety tested by the manufacturer. The direct vent pipe is a double wall pipe that draws combustion air from outside the house through the outer wall of the vent and then pushes the exhaust out through the inner wall. This allows the system to be installed without a vertical chimney. The burner system and logs used in these fireplaces are designed specifically for each model of DV fireplace to maintain balance between the combustion air and exhaust pressure as well as the internal heat inside the burning chamber. The burner systems cannot be modified in any way without creating a potential fire and health hazard.
