What to look for in a ceiling fan

What are these Ceiling Fan Comparison Graphs?

As of January 1, 2009, all ceiling fan manufacturers are required to test and publish data regarding the performance of their fans. Specifically, the CFMs (Cubic Feet per Minute of Airflow), the Watts (amount of electricity used per hour) and the Efficiency (EPA defines as CFM/Watts).

We have added this new information to our previous rating system and come up with an even better method of comparing ceiling fans. These new "Comparison Graphs" allow you to easily compare ceiling fans at a glance. Once you understand how to interpret these graphs, it becomes quite easy to compare the perforance of any fan on our site at a glance.

Room Size and CFM Chart

Although the EPA now requires fan manufacturers to publish the CFM ratings of their fans, there is no standardized scientific method of determining what size and CFM fan is best for any given application. A few quick searches and you will find that each ceiling fan manufacturer interprets this differently. So we created our won size and CFM recommendation chart to give you an idea what we recommend for "typical" applications. We produced this chart based on over 20 years of experience dealing with ceiling fans and the people who we've sold them to. For the most part, this chart will suffice. If you have low ceilings, you can fudge a little on the CFM and use a fan in the lesser range of the room size. If you have high ceilings, you need more CFM and a fan closer to the larger size of the chart. In most cases, the more the CFM the better and the higher the quality score the better!

    ." Control transmitter NOT recommended for use with more than one ceiling fan.. " How do you control this fan if you have two fans installed on a vaulted ceiling?

    Answer: Each of the Casablanca Vita ceiling fans will come with their own remote control that should be programmed to match up with its own fan when installed. So you simply use one control for each fan. We never recommend trying to use 1 remote transmitter to control 2 fans because if for some reason one picks up the signal and the other does not, then your fans will be out of sync (1 on and 1 off), and it is difficult to get them back in sync. The potential for this problem is even worse in larger rooms where one fan may be out of range of the transmitter while the other is not depending on where you are standing in the room. For this reason, you will find that virtually all ceiling fan manufacturers recommend using a single remote control for each fan. Hardwired wall controls are the only 100% reliable method of controlling multiple fans at the same time, but it is costly to run the wires in such a manner if they do not already exist, which is why many of the higher end fans nowadays come with remote controls. So, just use the 2 controls that you get with the fans.

    Need advice to remove ceiling fan Casablanca Model No. CB 184440 from the ceiling. The fan is so tight to the ceiling I cannot get a screwdriver between the fan to get to a slot in the cover that is against the ceiling. I can see a screw in the slot but cannot get to it. Do I have to take the fan apart? Or what?

    Answer: Not sure what model of Casablanca fan you have since the model number you supplied is not a Casablanca model number. Regardless, my suggestion is that you tilt the fan away from you as you attempt to remove the screw. The fan sits in a ball that can rotate up to 30 degrees when you push on it. Be careful not to bend the blade irons by pushing on the blades. I would remove the blades first for that matter to make it easier. Also, it is best if you use a very short phillips head screwdriver.

    Can this fan hook directly into our household 120V AC current? Do we need a converter? If we need a converter, would it lose energy efficiency?

    Answer: All of the ceiling fans on our site that have DC motors are designed to be hooked up directly to your normal 120V AC household current without any special converter.     Answer: Some time ago, Casablanca ceiling fans were actually assembled in the USA. But that has long sense changed for virtually ALL ceiling fan brands sold in the USA, which are now made in China or Taiwan. What makes Casablanca fans different than most other brands is that they require a higher level of quality control during the manufacturing process and they develop their own designs that are period specific.     I was wondering why the DC stealth was discontinued earlier in the year. Were there problems with the fan design. I see that it is once again back on the market, but am concerned about whether I should buy a DC stealth vs. a regular one. Can you give me some insight as to why it was discontinued earlier this year. Also, when I go to the Casablanca site, they still do not have any DC stealths on their site.

    Answer: The Casablanca DC Stealth is a new introduction this year and was never discontinued. In an effort to stay ahead of the curve and be the first to introduce new products on our site, we will often times add new items before they are actually available in order to allow our customers to pre-order them so they can get in on the first shipments that arrive. In such cases, the inventory count is zero on our site, which triggers a notice that the fan is either discontinued or on backorder. Items that are on backorder will have an expected arrival date, which was the case with the DC Stealth.

    The DC Stealth is in fact a fantastic product. We have experienced no problems with the fan at all, and in fact it has surpassed our original expectations and we consider it one of the best ceiling fans on the market.

    As far as Casablanca not having the fan on their website, well...you would need to talk to their webmaster to find out why they are behind in updating their site this year. It is not uncommon that we show new products on our site before the manufacturers get their sites updated. These things do take a lot of time and effort, but we have been doing this since 1994, so we have a leg up on most ceiling fan websites when it comes to introducing new items.

    our outdoor covered screened porch is at least 15x15. i am looking for a wobble free, silent fan with lighting, as this one has. we have about 5 months of the year when we would run the fan, and only when we are outdoors. i would like a remote control to use with this fan to turn it on, off, adjust speed and turn on or dim the lights. the porch is to be built so the wall control and wiring is yet to be done. is it possible iwth this fan? also, why is this fan more expensive than other?

    Answer: The Casablanca Atria cannot be operated by a remote control. The included wall control must be hard wired with a hot wire run to the fan motor and a hot wire run to the light fixture if you want to operate them independently. Casablanca makes this fan to a much higher level of quality than any other brand of fans. When you see the fan in person, it is visually obvious. The huge powerful motor runs dead quiet without wobbling, yet pushes over 9,000 CFM of airflow, which is hugely advantageous in an outdoor setting because it helps ward off pesky bugs while cooling you off. You cannot buy a better fan. Keep in mind that remote control transmitters, although they can be used with some outdoor ceiling fans, they themselves are not rated for use outdoors. So what you will find is that most outdoor ceiling fans are either pull-chain operated or come with a wall control.     Is there any way possible to make this fan work with 8 foot ceilings? We realize that we would not be able to use the frilly downrod. vBut the body is still beautiful with its ornate wood. We are looking for a beautiful fan such as this for our 600 sq ft family room that has 8 foot ceilings. Thank you!

    Answer: The Casablanca Vicente ceiling fan comes with both a 13" decorative downrod and a 5" plain downrod in the box. The 5" downrod is designed for applications where the fan is to be installed on an 8 foot ceiling, the 13" decorative scroll downrod is for use with ceilings that are higher than 9 feet. So in answer to your question, just buy the fan as it is and you will be able to install it on your 8 foot ceiling without the decorative scroll and without the need to purchase anything else.

    Looking to buy a fan for our cottage (Casablanca model #4746D). Comparison is good - CFM above average. Rated for damp locations. Everything looks good. What can you tell me about the "rustic iron" finish?? What color does it read??

    Answer: Rustic iron finish shown on the Casablanca Estrada ceiling fan is a reddish-brown color that is meant to resemble the color of rusted iron. It is lightly textured and varies slightly in shading. If you click on the picture of the fan on our product details page, you will see an enlargement which is a fairly good depiction of the finish, although it will vary in tone from computer to computer. Overall, the rustic iron finish is an exellent finish for use outdoors because it tends to hide the dirt that accumulates on outdoor ceiling fans.
