If your fan will be installed outdoors or in a damp or wet location, you are going to want a fan that is UL listed for use outdoors. Damp rated fans cannot be exposed directly to rain, whereas wet rated fans can. A covered patio would normally use a damp rated fan, where a gazebo would use a wet rated fan. You can use a wet rated fan in a damp location, but you cannot use a damp rated fan in a wet location. Ceiling Fan Airflow Rating Chart...
We always recommend fans with an airflow rating of at least 3, but you will be the most satisfied with top of the line ceiling fans that have a rating of 4 or 5. Ceiling fans with the highest ratings will usually cost more due to the hi-performance parts used to make them, so it's possible your budget will dictate how comfortable you end up feeling.
