What to look for in a ceiling fan

What are these Ceiling Fan Comparison Graphs?

As of January 1, 2009, all ceiling fan manufacturers are required to test and publish data regarding the performance of their fans. Specifically, the CFMs (Cubic Feet per Minute of Airflow), the Watts (amount of electricity used per hour) and the Efficiency (EPA defines as CFM/Watts).

We have added this new information to our previous rating system and come up with an even better method of comparing ceiling fans. These new "Comparison Graphs" allow you to easily compare ceiling fans at a glance. Once you understand how to interpret these graphs, it becomes quite easy to compare the perforance of any fan on our site at a glance.

Read more details about this topic here at: Who Makes the Best Ceiling Fans - The Online Guide to Comparing Ceiling Fans!

CFM = Cubic Feet of Airflow per Minute | Efficiency = CFM/Watts | Quality = 1 to 5 where 5 is best

Fans with the highest CFM rating move the most air so they will keep you the coolest. The more CFMs your fan can produce, the less you will use your air conditioning (which can save you lots of money). Simply put, fans with the highest CFM will save the most on your cooling bills.

Ceiling fans cool you off by creating a wind chill effect, they do not change the actual temperature in a room. Ceiling Fans with higher Wind Speed will create the most wind chill effect. The Wind Speed is the calculated measure of the expected wind velocity in the column of air directly beneath the span of the blades, so it takes into consideration the CFMs and the Blade Span of a fan.

Fans with the highest Quality Rating (4 or 5) have superior precision made components, so they tend not to wobble or make noise and can be left running for long periods of time (days on end) without breaking down. So your challenge is to find a ceiling fan that looks good to you, is the right size for your room, has the highest CFM and Quality ratings, yet still fits within your budget.

Hansen Wholesale is the only website that gives you all the tools you need to make this happen...quickly and easily.

CFM is defined as Cubic Feet per Minute. The CFM of a ceiling fan is determined by a standardized test adpoted by the EPA. As of January 1st 2009, all manufacturers are required to test their fans and provide this information to dealers and consumers.

Wind Speed: To make it easier for you to compare fans of various CFM and blade spans, we calculate the wind speed of the air colum below the fan. This calculation is based on the CFMs per square foot of blade span, and then converted to Miles Per Hour. Ceiling fans cool you off by creating a wind chill effect, not by changing the temperature in a room. The breeze created by a ceiling fan is mostly concentrated in the column of air just beneath the blades. Two fans that generate the same CFM but have different blade spans will cool you off differently. A larger fan will have a wider column of air that is less concentrated (lower wind speed) than a smaller fan. So the smaller fan will make you feel cooler when you are directly beneath it, while the larger fan will provide less breeze, but spread it over a larger area. So when see a fan that has a very high CFM, be sure to look at the blade span and wind speed as well to see how they compare to other fans.

Quality Rating is from 1 to 5 where 5 is the very best. This is a more subjective score that we devised ourselves to rate ceiling fans before the EPA began requiring manufacturers to publish performance data. Although this rating does consider the CFMs produced by a fan, it also considers the quality of the components used to make the fan. So you will find fans with high CFM ratings, yet have lower Quality ratings and visa-versa.

Averages: It is good to know what the average performance and quality of every fan is so that you can get a better feel for what these numbers mean. If you stick with fans that are above average, then you will be more satisfied and visa-versa. These averages are calculated every time this page loads, so as we add or discontinue fans from our site, it is real data dynamically generated, not typed in by someone who could make an error or fudge it.

Out of 1607 fans on our site that have performance data available, here are some averages:

  • Average CFM = 5,569 CFM
  • Average Watts = 73.84 Watts
  • Average Efficiency = 75.42 CFM/Watts
  • Average Quality Rating = 3.00
  • Average Price = $300.20

Here are the averages for all 245 fans that have a quality rating of 5:

  • Average CFM = 6,370 CFM
  • Average Watts = 99.58 Watts
  • Average Efficiency = 63.97 CFM/Watts
  • Average Quality Rating = 4.00
  • Average Price = $374.42

Here are the averages for all 202 fans that have a quality rating of 2:

  • Average CFM = 4,563 CFM
  • Average Watts = 60.37 Watts
  • Average Efficiency = 75.58 CFM/Watts
  • Average Quality Rating = 2.00
  • Average Price = $172.29

Room Size and CFM Chart

Although the EPA now requires fan manufacturers to publish the CFM ratings of their fans, there is no standardized scientific method of determining what size and CFM fan is best for any given application. A few quick searches and you will find that each ceiling fan manufacturer interprets this differently. So we created our won size and CFM recommendation chart to give you an idea what we recommend for "typical" applications. We produced this chart based on over 20 years of experience dealing with ceiling fans and the people who we've sold them to. For the most part, this chart will suffice. If you have low ceilings, you can fudge a little on the CFM and use a fan in the lesser range of the room size. If you have high ceilings, you need more CFM and a fan closer to the larger size of the chart. In most cases, the more the CFM the better and the higher the quality score the better!

If you are not sure what to do, just call and talk to our ceiling fan experts at 1-800-201-1193

    Ceiling Fans Question

View page where question was posted

I have a Hunter Original ceiling fan that was in the house when we purchased it 25 years ago. It is a Model 25750 It has developed a rather severe wobble that I cannot balance out with the Hunter Balancing kit. Switching adjacent blades and putting the plastic clip in the various positions has no noticible effect. Should I try replacing the fan blades for the next step or have an expert look it over? If I need new blades, what would a set with the securing hardware cost? Thank-you.

Answer: It is not uncommon for someone (without your knowledge) to have hit the blades with a broom handle or something while the fan was spinning, which will bend one or more of the blade holders. It is also possible that one or more of the blades is warped...which can happen over the years if you are in a humid climate. To check for these issues, remove all of the blades and blade holders from the ceiling fan. Once you have the blades detached from the blade holders, stack the blades on top of each other and you will be able to see if any are warped. Do the same with the blade holders to see if one or more are bent to a different angle than the others. If any blades or blade holders are warped or bent, then call us to get them replaced. Give us a call and we will be happy to quote you a price and lead time for replacements. If you find nothing out of the ordinary, then double check the mounting hardware in the ceiling to make sure all screws are tight and that the junction box is not loose.

Can you get a brighter led light to replace what comes with it? This in on the Hunter eco fan #25120. Thank you.

Answer: You cannot change the light fixture that is included with the Hunter Eco Air ceiling fan. The whole intent of the Eco Air ceiling fan is to be very Energy Efficient. The 9 Watt LED light fixture produces about as much light as a single frosted incandescent bulb...which is not very much light. In this case, the light fixture is designed to be used as supplemental lighting, so do not anticipate that the fan will light an entire room. The 9 Watt light fixture provides huge energy savings compared to other fans that use nearly 200 Watts.

Ceiling Fans Question - Hunter Stockbridge Model 23963

Follow-up to question #8597. Given that the 500 sq ft room is essentially square, can you provide guidelines for placement of two fans in the room? Thanks. P.S. I am actually considering the Emerson Eco, which has about the same ceiling-to-blade distance as the Minka Aire Concept II you recommended. My celing is actually 93", a little higher than I thought.

Answer: When installing multiple ceiling fans in a single room, you want the ceiling fans positioned equidistantly from each other and from the walls. To determine the position of each fan, simply divide the space into equal areas based on the number of fans to be installed. Each fan then needs to be placed in the center of each area. So, for 2 fans...just cut the room in half and install each fan in the center of each halved space. If the room is rectangular, cut the room in half at the center of the longer wall. You will find a diagram and more information here: How to Position 2 Ceiling Fans in a Room

Here is a link to the super efficient Emerson Midway Eco Ceiling Fan mentioned in the posted question.

    Ceiling Fans Question

View page where question was posted

My old fan of thirty years has an electrical growl each rotation. I was told if you dont have the correct switch or wired properly the growl is there. Is this true? can tou tell me the correct wiring diagram. Or is it something else.

Answer: If you do not wire a ceiling fan properly, it will not work at all and will most likely short out and throw a breaker, so the way your fan is wired is certainly not the reason it is making noise. If you have a dimmer switch on the wall that you are using to control your fan, that will introduce a humming noise that will worsen over time and eventually cause permanent damage to the windings in the motor. That damage can eventually cause your fan to produce a growling sound on each rotation. The same issue can be caused by using a control that is not designed specifically for ceiling fans or that is underrated for the amperage of your fan. If you own a Cast Iron Hunter Original ceiling fan, it probably just needs oil. It is also quite likely that after 30 years, your motor is just worn out and it is time buy a new fan. Ceiling Fans Question - Hunter Royal Palm Model 23895

Does it woble? I have a 9ft ceiling and I plan to use a 12" down rod

Answer: The Hunter Royal Palm is a good quality ceiling fan that can in fact be balanced during installation so that it does not wobble. Keep in mind that most ceiling fans will wobble if they are not properly installed and part of the installation process is balancing the fan blades. There are a few higher quality ceiling fans (for about 2 times the price) that do not require balancing during installation, and there are quite a few lesser quality fans that cannot ever be balanced.

iS THIS FAN AVAILABLE WITH WHITE BLADES?

Answer: Unfortunately, Hunter does not offer blade options for their ceiling fans (with a few exceptions), so the Covent Garden is only available with the reversible Cherry/Dark Walnut blades that are included in the box. I would recommend taking a look at the Emerson Crown Ceiling Fan Model CF4500AB, which is a similar style ceiling fan that does not come with blades or lights, so you can choose from dozens of blade finishes (white being one) as well as many different light fixtures to customize the fan however you like.

Is this fan a good choice for a 500 sq ft room? The room is essentially a square with lowish (7.5 ft) ceilings. Or would I be better off with 2 smaller fans? Thanks.

Answer: The Hunter Stockbridge is a great ceiling fan for a 500 sq ft room, but your ceilings are simply too low for this fan to be appropriate. I would suggest you use two 52" flushmount ceiling fans so that you have better circulation and more headroom. I would recommend the Minka Aire Concept II Ceiling Fans for your application.

we want to purchase the Hunter Convent Gardens fan to hang over our kitchen table. We need a close to the ceiling down rod. Is there one available for this fan in a burnished brass finish?

Answer: The Hunter Covent Garden ceiling fans come with a 3 position mounting system, which means they can be flush mounted (without a downrod), mounted using the standard downrod, or a longer downrod can be added. So, you can install the fan close to your ceiling without purchasing any additional hardware.

I need a longer down rod for a sharply angled great room ceiling since the radius of 36 and the longest down rod of 36 will hit ceiling What are my options ?? can I get a 48 " or 52 " downrod ...fixture plate on ceiling is 12" from floor ready to buy 8 fans within 10 days for new house ....all remote all with lights ...all need to be similar to this one Hunter Fellini 72 in. Model 28614

Answer: Hunter does not make downrods in the Brushed Cocoa finish longer than 36". So in cases such as yours, we recommend using a flat black downrod since it is neutral and will look fine with any darker finished Hunter ceiling fan. Flat Black downrods are available in 12" increments up to 72". If your ceiling is angled more than 30 degrees, you are also going to need a matching sloped ceiling adapter as well, unless you have built a flat spot in the ceiling where each fan will hang. Here are links to order these items separately:

I would suggest that you call us to place your order to make sure you get everything you need.

Can this fan be operated via a wall switch or only with the remote control.

Answer: There is no wall control option for the Hunter Lugano ceiling fans, so they can only be operated by the remote control that comes with the fan. If you must have a fan that operates from a wall control, you may want to consider the 3245T Casablanca Stealth Ceiling Fans which includes a 6 speed wall control and is available in the same motor and blade finish combination as the Lugano. The Stealth is a bit more pricey because it is a much higher quality fan and has more features.

Ceiling Fans Question - Hunter The Sontera Model 22436

I purchased the Sontera fan and had it installed. The fan operates o.k. Using the wall and built-in fan switches. However, Only the fan turn-on feature works using the remote control and that only if held in some overhead position for some period of time. No other remote feature works from any position. Any suggestions or remote replacement ideas?

Answer: Try changing the dip switch settings in both the transmitter and receiver to a new setting (they must match). If this does not correct the issue, then contact Hunter Customer Service so they can help you trouble-shoot the problem and get your fan working properly. Here is the contact info: Hunter Customer Service at: 1-888-830-1326 or visit them online here: Hunter Online Customer Care. Had you purchased your fan from us, I would have our customer service department help you directly. Unfortunately, we do not have the wherewithal to offer that level of service to those who have purchased elsewhere.
