What to look for in a ceiling fan

What are these Ceiling Fan Comparison Graphs?

As of January 1, 2009, all ceiling fan manufacturers are required to test and publish data regarding the performance of their fans. Specifically, the CFMs (Cubic Feet per Minute of Airflow), the Watts (amount of electricity used per hour) and the Efficiency (EPA defines as CFM/Watts).

We have added this new information to our previous rating system and come up with an even better method of comparing ceiling fans. These new "Comparison Graphs" allow you to easily compare ceiling fans at a glance. Once you understand how to interpret these graphs, it becomes quite easy to compare the perforance of any fan on our site at a glance.

Room Size and CFM Chart

Although the EPA now requires fan manufacturers to publish the CFM ratings of their fans, there is no standardized scientific method of determining what size and CFM fan is best for any given application. A few quick searches and you will find that each ceiling fan manufacturer interprets this differently. So we created our won size and CFM recommendation chart to give you an idea what we recommend for "typical" applications. We produced this chart based on over 20 years of experience dealing with ceiling fans and the people who we've sold them to. For the most part, this chart will suffice. If you have low ceilings, you can fudge a little on the CFM and use a fan in the lesser range of the room size. If you have high ceilings, you need more CFM and a fan closer to the larger size of the chart. In most cases, the more the CFM the better and the higher the quality score the better!

    Looking for Hunter outdoor deiling fan #21955

    Answer: The Hunter fan model 21955 is the Hunter Mariner, which is a low end fan that Hunter makes exclusively for Home Depot. We do not sell or recommend this particular Hunter fan. Please call us and we will be happy to help you choose a higher quality fan that is reasonably priced. We have over 2,000 ceiling fans to choose from, many of them being rated for use outdoors.     Can this fan be operated with remotee control? Can it be added at a later date? Will it accept a extention from a old hunter unit IE 24 year old cast motor type? thanks Chuck

    Answer: Yes, you can add a remote control to the Hunter Paramount XP. I would recommend buying a new downrod since there have been changes in the way they are threaded and attached over the years. You can select the downrod and remote by clicking on the appropriate orange buttons below the picture of the fan on the product detail page where it says "Choose custom options here".

    Can i use any light fixture kit on my hunter celing fan?

    Answer: No, Hunter has their own way of mounting light fixtures to their fans, so other brands will not fit. The finishes rarely match either.

    You will need to purchase a Hunter fixture for your Hunter fan. But also, you must be sure that Hunter even makes fixtures that fit your particular model. Do you know the model number of the fan you own? If so, let me know and I'll see if I can’t check to see what fits your fan. Or try emailing me some pictures of your fan.     Hello, Your website is THEE MOST informative and helpful and once I narrow my decision I will happily be purchasing my fan from you. I am between the Hunter Classic original, the Emerson Premium and the Emerson Carrera Crande DC. All have various pluses and minuses for my application. I would like to know how much risk of oil leakage the Hunter poses..?

    Answer: I have been in the ceiling fan business for over 25 years and during that time have never had a custom report that oil leaked from their Hunter Original ceiling fan other than when they took it down and moved it. You just need to be careful not to tip the fan too much when there is oil in it. Once installed, it won't leak.

    Answer: The Hunter Bainbridge ceiling fan does not have any light fixture options and is sold only as you see it.     I have an insignia fan installed without the light. Wondering if I can purchase smaller blades to make a 44inch span vs 52inch in cherry finish. Note; fan has rubber grommet type hardware to attach blades vs. screws.

    Answer: The Hunter Insignia ceiling fan is designed to accommodate 52" blades only, nothing more or less. Not only does Hunter not make smaller blades to fit this fan, if you found some that did fit, they could damage the motor. Shorter blades create less drag on the motor and make it spin faster. If the motor is not designed to operate in a higher RPM range with less drag it could potentially burn out. There are only a few ceiling fans on the market with motors that are designed to handle different blade spans. So I am going to have to say no to this one.

    one of my blades is bent on my fan and i need to replace it. I was painting my ceiling and somehow the remote control got cut on and i had a sheet over the fan and blades and the sheet got twisted and bend my fan blade. Im glad it did not burn up the motor. That is y I need to replace the blades. It is a Hunter 'Sonic" fan

    Info states a 3 inch down rod is included - it also states cannot be flush mounted. Does that mean you have to use the 3 inch rod when mounting or can it be mounted to the 3.1 inch ceiling plate? Model #21894

    Answer: The Hunter Westover ceiling fans cannot be mounted directly to the fan canopy (as you can with some other Hunter fans), you must use the included downrod at minimum.

    Keep in mind that using the flushmount option on any Hunter fan that has that available will reduce the airflow of the fan significantly because the blades end up too close to the ceiling to allow the air to flow around them unrestricted. The flushmount option should only be chosen if you have a ceiling height lower than 8 feet.
