Remote Control Control

Included Control (MF-RCS212): The RCS212 AireControl® Full Function Hand Held Remote Control featuring 3 speeds in forward and reverse as well as a full range light dimmer. Requires just 2 wires for installation (1 hot wire). A receiver unit also comes with the fan that is compatible with the optional WCS212 wall control (sold separately), should you decide to operate the fan from a wall control and remote control.

Can I operate more than 1 fan from a single remote? Although it is possible to operate multiple ceiling fans from a single remote control, we do NOT recommend it with any brand. Doing so can cause your fans to get out of sync (one off and the other on, or one on high and the other on low) and getting them back in sync becomes quite a challenge. To avoid frustration, be sure to operate each fan from its own designated remote control.

How does the Minka Aire Concept II 44 Compare to the Average Ceiling Fan?

Ceiling Fan Comparison Graph
4
4,071
93
44
3.14
Breeze Rating: 4 (5 is best)
Wind Speed Factor: 3.14 MPH

Graph represents 44" blade span
How to read our graphs

Quality Rating = 4 (average is 3)
A Quality Rating of 4 is above average, the Minka Aire Concept II 44 ceiling fan will run smooth and quiet and will give you many years of operation with no worries of the motor burning out.

Note: CFM and Wind Speed are calculated using standard shaped 44" blades. The size and shape of the blades will alter the performance dramatically. For example: Palm style and carved wood leaf shaped blades can reduce performance by as much as 50%!

Wind Speed Factor: 3.14 MPH (average is about 3)
A Wind Speed Factor of 3.14 MPH gives this fan a Breeze Rating of 4 out of 5. This is above average when it comes to ceiling fans, so you can expect to feel a decent amount of cooling breeze, but it is not the best. Aside from Quality, which accounts for smooth quiet operation and durability, the amount of wind-chill a fan can provide to cool you off is the most important consideration. Afterall, why do want a ceiling fan in the first place?

Airflow = 4071 CFM (average is about 5,000)
4071 CFM is below average, so don't expect to feel much of a breeze from this fan unless you are directly beneath it. Fans with this low of a CFM rating will not provide enough breeze for larger rooms. If you are concerned about whether or not the Minka Aire Concept II 44 will move enough air for your needs, please give us a call and we will help you make the determination. This fan may not allow you to raise your thermostat, so do not expect to save much on your cooling bills (if you have AC).

Efficiency Rating = 93 CFM/Watt (average is about 86)
An Efficiency Rating of 93 is fairly average. Efficiency is defined by the EPA as the amount of airflow a fan produces (CFM) divided by the amount of electricity (Watts) it uses on high speed without any lights on. Efficiency is less important than Airflow because more CFMs allow you to raise your thermostat higher...which is where you will save the most energy. Efficiency becomes more important if you expect to operate several ceiling fans at the same time. (see calculator below)

Electrical Usage = 44 Watts (average is about 76)
44 Watts per hour is well below average, which is excellent because the Minka Aire Concept II 44 will cost less to operate than the average ceiling fan. Use the calculator below to estimate just how much it will cost to operate this fan in "Your home".

Wind Speed Factor -vs- Efficiency: Wind Speed is KING! Ceiling fans can save you a lot on your energy bills if you use them properly to reduce your use of central air. Ceiling fans cool you off by creating a wind-chill effect, so the more wind speed a fan generates, the cooler it will make you feel. The cooler your ceiling fan can make you feel, the higher you can raise your AC thermostat to conserve energy without sacrificing your level of comfort. Raising your thermostat by 10 degrees can save you up to 40% on your cooling bills, but you cannot raise your thermostat by 10 degrees if you focus only on ceiling fans that use less energy rather than ones that generate higher wind speed. To put this in perspective: A typical central air system uses about 3500 Watts when it is running, so if a ceiling fan that uses 100 watts allows you to raise your thermostat a couple degrees higher than a more "efficient" fan that uses only 50 watts, the savings you will get by raising your AC therestat a couple degrees higher is far more than the difference of 50 watts between the two fans. With that said, a ceiling fan that uses less watts yet produces higher wind speed is a win-win.

Blade Span CFM Wind Speed MPH Wind Speed LFM Calculate
3.14 MPH
385.54 LFM

Fan Size -vs- Wind Speed -vs- CFM

Note: The formula for calculating wind speed was revised on 1/31/2015. The previous formula did not take into account that the testing chamber (cylinder) used to determine the CFM of a fan is 8" in diameter larger than the blade span. The revised formula ads 8" to the fan diameter to account for this. The wind speed results are now slightly lower than previosly stated

"When it comes to ceiling fan size...the largest fan with the highest wind speed that will look fine in the area is the best choice!"

Ceiling fans cool you off by creating a wind-chill effect, the degree of which is determined by the wind speed produced by the fan; the higher the wind speed, the cooler you feel. It is critical to know the following; CFM is not the same as wind speed; the wind chill effect you feel from a ceiling fan is concentrated in the column of air directly beneath the fan blades; the wind chill drops off dramatically just a foot or two outside that area.

Ceiling fan manufacturers are required by the DOE to publish the airflow of each fan in CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) which is not the same as wind speed. CFM is the volume of air being moved every minute, whereas wind speed how fast the air is moving in MPH (Miles per Hour) or LFM (Linear Feet per Minute), both of which are directly related to the amount of wind chill effect. When you compare two fans that are different sizes yet have the same CFM you will find they produce quite different wind speeds. The smaller fan must move air faster in order to move the same amount of air per minute (CFM) as the larger fan. The airflow generated by the smaller creates more wind chill because it is more concentrated and has a higher wind speed. The larger fan of equal CFM moves air over a larger area so it is less concentrated at a lower wind speed. So when determining what size fan to buy you must consider the amount of space a fan will cover (the diameter of the fan plus a foot or two), the intensity of the airflow directly beneath the fan (the wind speed) balanced with how any particular size fan will look or fit in the space. Ultimately the largest fan with the highest wind speed that will look fine in the area is the best choice for performance.

The required testing method for ceiling fans is not done in a way that translates well to real world applications, so the CFM data can be somewhat deceiving if you do not know how to interpret it.

The current required test procedure (shown left) shows a ceiling fan hanging above a 3 foot tall metal cylinder that is 8 inches wider than the ceiling fan (blade span) and stands 4 feet above the floor. Sensors are located at the bottom of the cylinder to measure the wind speed. The wind speed is then converted into CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute). Although this testing procedure can be valuable for comparing the performance of fans equal in size, it does not emulate a real application inside a home and does not make it easy to compare fans that are different sizes in order to determine the best size fan(s) for any particular application.

Therefore, the best way to compare the actual performance between fans of various sizes is to compare the wind speed. The wind speed of a ceiling fan can be mathematically calculated based on the CFM and Blade Span. Here is a comparison where we performed the calculations between 3 fans of different blade spans and CFMs. The largest fan has the highest CFM yet the smallest fan produces the highest wind speed.

84" Fan with CFM of 10000 produces wind speed of 2.46 MPH (216.62 LFM)
52" Fan with CFM of 6500 produces wind speed of 3.76 MPH (331.04 LFM )

The above example shows how deceiving CFM data can be. Even though the 52" fan moves 35% less air than the 84" fan, the intensity of the breeze that produces a wind-chill effect is over 50% more than that of the larger fan and will make you feel much cooler if you are directly beneath it. So, to cover a larger area, two or more smaller fans with good performance may be a better choice than a single large higher CFM fan.

**Light Fixture Note
Important Note: Due to government legislation regarding the efficiency and wattage ceiling fan light fixtures (EPACT 2005) the fixture you receive may use a different bulb than what is described. This is because most manufacturers have rolling changes in their inventory in order to bring their fixtures into compliance, so there is no way to know which fixture the manufacturer will ship until all of their old inventory has been depleted. Most fixtures that used Medium Base Bulbs in the past will be changed to use Candelabra Base Bulbs. Also, since the legislation mandates that the total wattage of a ceiling fan light cannot exceed 190Watts, the maximium wattage of the bulbs may be lowered to meet this criteria and will most likely have a limiting fuse designed to trigger if you use bulbs that exceed this wattage.

QUESTION: Can I replace 44 inch blades for my minka concept II hugger ceiling fan with 52 inch blades, or do I need to buy a whole new fan?

ANSWER: The larger blades included with the 52" Concept ceiling fans will not work with the 44" version. The motor inside the 44" fan is smaller and is not designed to handle the torque of the larger blades, so it will eventually burn out the motor if the larger blades were used. Also, the 44" fan motor would not be able to reach optimal RPM with 52" blades and would most likely move less air than with the 44" blades. Bottom line is, if you need the fan to be larger you will need to replace the entire fan.

QUESTION: If purchase fan, is it necessary to buy either RCS212 or WCS212 controls? There is only one switch on the wall to control fan. Without these optional extra controls, can I operate the light and fan separately? Thanks.

ANSWER: The Minka Aire Concept fans come with a hand held remote control for operating the ceiling fan. Your switch on the wall provides power to the fan. So in order for the remote to work the switch simply needs to be in the on position. You do not need to purchase any additional controls to operate the fan as it comes. If you wish to operate the fan from your existing wall switch, you would purchase the WCS212 wall control which converts it into a wall operated remote with the same functions as the hand held remote that comes with the fan. You would not need any extra wiring for the WCS212 to work. With the wall control installed, you can use both the included RCS212 remote control and the WCS212 wall control to operate the fan.

QUESTION: We have a bedroom that has an 8 foot ceiling. I am 6 foot 3 inches and we had a casablanca with a mushroom light which I was bumping my head. I want to replace the fan with a new one but still want the light. the room is a second floor bednroom that gets hot in summer. It is about 12 by 18. Should I use the 52" MInk Aire flushmount or is there enough room for a regular mount in which case I think I could use a smaller blade.

ANSWER: Actually, a room that is 12 x 18 should use at least a 52" fan, nothing smaller. The Minka Aire Concept II hangs only 10 1/2" from the ceiling to the bottom of the light, yet still moves lots of air (most hugger fans move very little air) and has the convenience of a remote control (excellent for bedrooms). I believe the Minka Aire Concept II flushmount would be an ideal choice for you.

QUESTION: I am wanting to install a new ceiling fan in a very small room. The light fixture is very close to the ceiling vent. Is there a recommended clearance from a AC vent in the ceiling to the center of a ceiling fan?

ANSWER: Good question...for which I do not have a definitive answer because none of the major ceiling fan manufacturers have addressed this issue in any publication that I am aware of. So left to my own logic and experience, I will say this: Air blowing down from the AC vent onto the fan blades will cause the fan to wobble, so the fan needs to be far enough away to prevent that from happening (how far being your question). I am going to suggest that an additional clearance of 24" would be adequate. So in order to calculate the distance to the center of the fan from the vent, you need to first know the radius of the blade sweep, which is half of the overall blade span. So, for a 44" fan such as the Minka Aire Concept II that you are considering, the center of the fan should be about 46" from the edge of the vent...that is half the blade span of 44" is 22" plus an extra 24" clearance. Logic would say that if you have vents that angle outward and have a very powerful air conditioning fan, you may want to add even more than 24", whereas if your vents blow directly downward, you can most likely allow less than 24".

QUESTION: I just installed a Concept II Flush 44 Ceiling Fan-I wish I would have found your site 1st, I would have saved $40.00. Anyway, Its not giving out much air, even on high. I double checked blade position and they are correct. On high, you can feel the air if you are directly under it, but if you move 5 or 6 feet away, Nothing. Is this normal? Is the fan defective? Should I put it on a bigger circuit. . . would that make a difference?

ANSWER: The 44" Minka Aire Concept II ceiling fan produces about 4,600 CFM (cubic feet of airflow per minute), which is above average for a hugger fan. The 52" Version generates a whopping 6,300 CFM, which is about the most you can get from a hugger fan. So for starters, there is a huge difference in performance between the 2 sizes...namely because the larger fan has a larger more powerful motor. But let me explain some things about flushmount ceiling fans that you were likely not made aware wherever it was that you bought your fan. Flush mount fans move less air than fans that hang from a short downrod. This is common knowledge among those in the ceiling fan industry. The blades of a flush mount ceiling fan are usually somewhere from 6" to 10" from the ceiling, which is too close to the ceiling for the air to circulate around them efficiently. The ideal distance from ceiling to blades (for optimal performance) is somewhere between 12" to 18". Because building codes require fan blades to be at least 7 feet from the floor, rooms that have ceilings lower than 8 feet require a fan that has blades that are closer than 12" from the ceiling...hence the need for flushmount ceiling fans. Although this is not the optimal distance for performance, it is a compromise that must be made if you have a low ceiling. For these reasons, we rarely recommend using a hugger fan in any room where the ceiling is 8 feet or higher. If the room in which you installed your Concept II has a ceiling that is 8 feet or higher, it is quite understandable why you are not satisfied with the performance.

Also, because there are 2 sizes with the Concept fans, many people make the mistake of choosing the smaller fan even though the larger model is the best choice. There is such a huge difference in the airflow generated between the 2 models, so from my view, the larger model should be used whenever possible (you can always turn it down if it generates too much air...but you cannot make the smaller model produce more air if it is not enough). Keep in mind that the 3 blade design of the 52" Concept makes it appear smaller than a typical 5 bladed 52" fan, so you can usually get away with using a slightly over-sized 3 bladed fan in a small room without overpowering it visually. Also, if you have a white ceiling, choosing a white fan will make it even less imposing. So a 52" concept II in white can work in a room as small as 10 x 10 (an application I have recommended many times).

I'd be interested in knowing the size of the room and height of the ceiling where your Concept fan is installed. I suspect you might have been better off with the 52" Concept II and would have found the performance to be quite satisfactory. I'd also like to hear your story of how you arrived at the decision to purchase the fan, and where you finally bought it. Although telling me these things will not solve your problem or help improve the performance of your fan, I find the dialog rather interesting and it gives me valuable information that I can share with other visitors who have similar situations or questions.

QUESTION: I want to install a ceiling fan with a good light in my daughter's BR. The room is 10' 8" x 12', with ceiling height of 7' 6". I tried Hunter 44" Stratford from HD (white finish flush-mount w/ 2 14W CFLs), but it hung too low (15.28 inches from ceiling). It's over the foot of the bed, so headroom was not the issue; it just looked too obtrusive. What would you suggest in lowest profile possible, but with good light? Thank you.

ANSWER: The Minka Aire Concept II ceiling fan that you were looking at when you posted your question is by far the fan that I would most recommend. It moves lots of air, runs very smooth and quiet and only drops 10 1/2" from the ceiling. The only other fan I would suggest is the Emerson Curva Sky 44, which is very similar. Some people prefer one over the other simply because of the slight difference in shape...although the Curva Sky drops down 2 more inches than the Concept, so in your case I would stick with the Concept. Here is a link to the Emerson Curva Sky 44 anyway: Emerson Curva Sky 44 Ceiling Fan

QUESTION: After reading reviews it sounds like the Minka Aire Concept 2 (44) is best for my bedroom, a 10 x 15 with 8 ft ceilings. It would replace our ceiling light. My question is can I use both a wallmounted controller and a remote with the fan?

ANSWER: Yes, by all means you can use the wall control and remote control together for the Concept II ceiling fans. However, based on your room size, I would suggest that you choose the 52" size over the 44". Please give us a call to discuss this further.

QUESTION: I know this question has been asked before (Ive seen it somewhere just couldn't find it), but I have recently installed 2 minka aire concept 2 fans (in separate rooms)and one wall mount and one remote operates both fans, the other wall mount only turns the entire system on and off and one remote doesnt work at all. Just curious what I need to do to get them operating sparately. Most important are the wall mounts (remotes will be stored, but perhaps imporatant for furture sale of house)

ANSWER: You need to make sure that the toggle switches for the wall control match the toggle switches in the ceiling fan receiver unit for each fan. Each fan should be set to a different configuration so that they do not conflict with each other. Details for locating the toggle switches and changing them are in your installation manual under step 4 Electrical Connections.
