Product Description
Shown in Picture: Minka Aire Concept II 52 Wet Ceiling Fan Model F574-BNW in Brushed Nickel Wet with Silver blades. The light fixture comes with this fan.. Integrated 100W Halogen light fixture with amber pietra glass for oil rubbed bronze models and white opal glass for brushed nickel and white models. The fixture uses 1-100W Mini-Can Halogen (bulbs included). The Concept II 52 Wet is a Ceiling Huggers 3 Blade Fans style Ceiling Fan Designed for use indoors or outdoors in dry, damp or wet locations. This fan features a 188mm x 20mm Motor with a 14 Degree Blade Pitch producing an AirFlow rating of 4 (where 5 is best). It is operated by a 3 Speed Wall Control. Other types of controls are also available. The Concept II Wet is the very first hugger style ceiling fan to be rated for wet locations outdoors. The hugger style body with integrated blades makes it excellent for areas that experience high winds where fans that have blades attached with more traditional blade holders are susceptable to breaking off. Even more, since it is wet rated, you can hose if off when it gets dirty! The fan features the WCS212 full function wall mount control system that can also be operated by a hand held remote control (Model RCS212 sold separately). The low profile integrated down-light uses 1-100W Mini-Can Halogen light (bulb included) that illuminates throught the white opal glass in the brushed nickel and white models, or the Pietra glass in the Oil Rubbed Bronze model.

How does the Minka Aire Concept II 52 Wet Compare to the Average Ceiling Fan?

Ceiling Fan Comparison Graph
4
5,699
106
54
3.3
Breeze Rating: 4 (5 is best)
Wind Speed Factor: 3.3 MPH

Graph represents 52" blade span
How to read our graphs

Quality Rating = 4 (average is 3)
A Quality Rating of 4 is above average, the Minka Aire Concept II 52 Wet ceiling fan will run smooth and quiet and will give you many years of operation with no worries of the motor burning out.

Wind Speed Factor: 3.3 MPH (average is about 3)
A Wind Speed Factor of 3.3 MPH gives this fan a Breeze Rating of 4 out of 5. This is above average when it comes to ceiling fans, so you can expect to feel a decent amount of cooling breeze, but it is not the best. Aside from Quality, which accounts for smooth quiet operation and durability, the amount of wind-chill a fan can provide to cool you off is the most important consideration. Afterall, why do want a ceiling fan in the first place?

Airflow = 5699 CFM (average is about 5,000)
5699 CFM is pretty much average, so don't expect a super strong breeze from this fan. However, most people are used to average ceiling fans, so if you have never experienced a fan more powerful than this, you may be satisfied with the Minka Aire Concept II 52 Wet. This fan should allow you to raise your thermostat by 1 or 2 degrees to save between 5% and 15% on your cooling bills (if you have AC).

Efficiency Rating = 106 CFM/Watt (average is about 86)
An Efficiency Rating of 106 is well above average. Efficiency is defined by the EPA as the amount of airflow a fan produces (CFM) divided by the amount of electricity (Watts) it uses on high speed without any lights on. Efficiency is less important than Airflow because more CFMs allow you to raise your thermostat higher...which is where you will save the most energy. Efficiency becomes more important if you expect to operate several ceiling fans at the same time. (see calculator below)

Electrical Usage = 54 Watts (average is about 76)
54 Watts per hour is well below average, which is excellent because the Minka Aire Concept II 52 Wet will cost less to operate than the average ceiling fan. Use the calculator below to estimate just how much it will cost to operate this fan in "Your home".

Wind Speed Factor -vs- Efficiency: Wind Speed is KING! Ceiling fans can save you a lot on your energy bills if you use them properly to reduce your use of central air. Ceiling fans cool you off by creating a wind-chill effect, so the more wind speed a fan generates, the cooler it will make you feel. The cooler your ceiling fan can make you feel, the higher you can raise your AC thermostat to conserve energy without sacrificing your level of comfort. Raising your thermostat by 10 degrees can save you up to 40% on your cooling bills, but you cannot raise your thermostat by 10 degrees if you focus only on ceiling fans that use less energy rather than ones that generate higher wind speed. To put this in perspective: A typical central air system uses about 3500 Watts when it is running, so if a ceiling fan that uses 100 watts allows you to raise your thermostat a couple degrees higher than a more "efficient" fan that uses only 50 watts, the savings you will get by raising your AC therestat a couple degrees higher is far more than the difference of 50 watts between the two fans. With that said, a ceiling fan that uses less watts yet produces higher wind speed is a win-win.

Blade Span CFM Wind Speed MPH Wind Speed LFM Calculate
3.3 MPH
386.42 LFM

Fan Size -vs- Wind Speed -vs- CFM

Note: The formula for calculating wind speed was revised on 1/31/2015. The previous formula did not take into account that the testing chamber (cylinder) used to determine the CFM of a fan is 8" in diameter larger than the blade span. The revised formula ads 8" to the fan diameter to account for this. The wind speed results are now slightly lower than previosly stated

"When it comes to ceiling fan size...the largest fan with the highest wind speed that will look fine in the area is the best choice!"

Ceiling fans cool you off by creating a wind-chill effect, the degree of which is determined by the wind speed produced by the fan; the higher the wind speed, the cooler you feel. It is critical to know the following; CFM is not the same as wind speed; the wind chill effect you feel from a ceiling fan is concentrated in the column of air directly beneath the fan blades; the wind chill drops off dramatically just a foot or two outside that area.

Ceiling fan manufacturers are required by the DOE to publish the airflow of each fan in CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) which is not the same as wind speed. CFM is the volume of air being moved every minute, whereas wind speed how fast the air is moving in MPH (Miles per Hour) or LFM (Linear Feet per Minute), both of which are directly related to the amount of wind chill effect. When you compare two fans that are different sizes yet have the same CFM you will find they produce quite different wind speeds. The smaller fan must move air faster in order to move the same amount of air per minute (CFM) as the larger fan. The airflow generated by the smaller creates more wind chill because it is more concentrated and has a higher wind speed. The larger fan of equal CFM moves air over a larger area so it is less concentrated at a lower wind speed. So when determining what size fan to buy you must consider the amount of space a fan will cover (the diameter of the fan plus a foot or two), the intensity of the airflow directly beneath the fan (the wind speed) balanced with how any particular size fan will look or fit in the space. Ultimately the largest fan with the highest wind speed that will look fine in the area is the best choice for performance.

The required testing method for ceiling fans is not done in a way that translates well to real world applications, so the CFM data can be somewhat deceiving if you do not know how to interpret it.

The current required test procedure (shown left) shows a ceiling fan hanging above a 3 foot tall metal cylinder that is 8 inches wider than the ceiling fan (blade span) and stands 4 feet above the floor. Sensors are located at the bottom of the cylinder to measure the wind speed. The wind speed is then converted into CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute). Although this testing procedure can be valuable for comparing the performance of fans equal in size, it does not emulate a real application inside a home and does not make it easy to compare fans that are different sizes in order to determine the best size fan(s) for any particular application.

Therefore, the best way to compare the actual performance between fans of various sizes is to compare the wind speed. The wind speed of a ceiling fan can be mathematically calculated based on the CFM and Blade Span. Here is a comparison where we performed the calculations between 3 fans of different blade spans and CFMs. The largest fan has the highest CFM yet the smallest fan produces the highest wind speed.

84" Fan with CFM of 10000 produces wind speed of 2.46 MPH (216.62 LFM)
52" Fan with CFM of 6500 produces wind speed of 3.76 MPH (331.04 LFM )

The above example shows how deceiving CFM data can be. Even though the 52" fan moves 35% less air than the 84" fan, the intensity of the breeze that produces a wind-chill effect is over 50% more than that of the larger fan and will make you feel much cooler if you are directly beneath it. So, to cover a larger area, two or more smaller fans with good performance may be a better choice than a single large higher CFM fan.

**Light Fixture Note
Important Note: Due to government legislation regarding the efficiency and wattage ceiling fan light fixtures (EPACT 2005) the fixture you receive may use a different bulb than what is described. This is because most manufacturers have rolling changes in their inventory in order to bring their fixtures into compliance, so there is no way to know which fixture the manufacturer will ship until all of their old inventory has been depleted. Most fixtures that used Medium Base Bulbs in the past will be changed to use Candelabra Base Bulbs. Also, since the legislation mandates that the total wattage of a ceiling fan light cannot exceed 190Watts, the maximium wattage of the bulbs may be lowered to meet this criteria and will most likely have a limiting fuse designed to trigger if you use bulbs that exceed this wattage.

QUESTION: Hello. I am looking to purchase the minka aire concept II ceiling fan per the hugger style. My ceiling height is 8 feet and my family room is 20 x 13 with the one side completely open to the kitchen. Looking for advice on determining between 52 and 44? Also, I do not intend to use the light package based on this fan will be in the middle of the open room and height is minimal. Can I purchase this model without the light package? Please advise. Thanks. Todd

ANSWER: Your room is quite large and would definitely require the larger 52" size. There is a huge performance difference between the 44" and 52". The 44" produces 4600 CFM while the 52" model produces 6300 CFM. No doubt you should use the larger fan. All of the Concept fans come with a bottom can that replaces the light fixture in the event you wish to install it without the light. However, it does not make much difference at all in the overall height of the fan, so my recommendation is to keep the light fixture installed...you will find yourself using it since it is handy with the remote and can add a nice ambiance to the room at times. FYI: You may also want to consider a fan that hangs on a short downrod since hugger fans are designed for ceilings that are lower than 8 feet and almost all other fans are designed specifically for 8 foot ceilings. With a room your size, you can use even more airflow! Call us so we can discuss this in more detail if you like.

Ceiling Fans Question - Minka Aire Model F574-BNW

QUESTION: is the Minka model ma-f518-bn outdoor rated only or wet rated? Does the Wet rated Minka F574-BNW come in a smaller (44" or so) model?

ANSWER: The F518 44" Concept II ceiling fans are not rated for use outdoors at all (neither damp nor wet locations). The F574 52" series is rated for outdoor Wet or Damp locations, but is not available in a smaller version. Because most outdoor locations are less limited in size, the demand for the 44" version simply does not warrant manufacturing it. If you must have a 44" fan, I suggest you consider the Emerson Curva Sky 44 model CF144BS. This fan is very similar to the Minka Aire Concept II and is outdoor rated for Wet or Damp locations.

FYI: The smaller 44" version of the indoor model uses a smaller motor and blades than the 52" fan. If it was just a matter of swapping out the blades, that would do the trick, but the 52" fan cannot accept the 44" blades and the motor would burn out due to the fact that the RPMs would be too high. In most cases, you can use a bit larger fan that you think...particularly outdoors where you need more airflow just to feel it.

QUESTION: our electrician installed a concept II. Now it sometimes (often?) gets into a state where turning the light off at the switch just dims the light by 50%we cant turn the light off completely except by turning off the entire fan power at the switch. Is this most likely operator error, a fan problem, or a wiring mistake?

ANSWER: I am assuming that your electrician installed the wall control that came with the fan. If not, that would explain the problem and you need to install the correct controller. If your electrician did in fact install the wall control that came with your Concept II Wet ceiling fan, then it is very likely that you have a defective wall control or receiver. If you bought the fan from us, just give us a call and we will be happy to send you a new controller and receiver to correct the problem. If you bought the fan somewhere else, contact the place where you made the purchase to see if they will offer you the same service. Otherwise, contact Minka Aire directly here: Minka Aire Customer Service.

QUESTION: I have 2 Minka Aire fans on one circuit with 1 hand remote operation for both. Some how one fan is changed direction. How can I get them back in sync, like they started? My name is Chris and can be reached @ 832-457-2568

ANSWER: The range of the remote transmitter for your ceiling fans is anywhere from 30 to 40 feet. So if you can stand about 30 feet from one of the fans while you are more than 40 feet form the other, you should be able to get the remote to actuate just one fan. This is likely what happened when they got out of sinc. If you need to move to a different room to make this happen, it will probably still work. Give it a try and let me know what happens by sending me an email: gregt@hansenwholesale.com.

QUESTION: Hello. I am looking for a 36 to 42 inch low profile interior ceiling fan in a nickel finish with no light or a light similar to the Minka. Do you sell any like this or are they available by custom order?

ANSWER: The Minka Aire Concept II Wet is an outdoor rated ceiling fan. Minka Aire makes the same model in both 52" and 44" sizes for use indoors. Both the indoor and outdoor models come with a bottom cap that replaces the light fixture, so you can install it with or without the lights if you choose. The 44" size should be sufficient for any small room where you might consider a 36" or 42" ceiling fan. Here is a link to the 44" indoor ceiling fan model: 44" Minka Aire Concept II

ANSWER: Actually, this is a very common thing that is available at most home centers, so ceiling fan manufacturers do not make them and we do not carry them. Try Home Depot or Sears...or the like.

QUESTION: Do you think this fan with light option can provide enough light as this would be the only light in the kitchen. Kitchen is a small 7x8, no eat in.

ANSWER: It would be sufficient for me...but I know others who need lots of light and would most likely disagree. The fan uses a 100W halogen bulb, which puts out just a bit more lumens than a standard 100w incandescent bulb. Halogen light is also higher on the spectrum, so it tends to make things look more vivid...which many people interpret as being brighter. You will need to figure this one out yourself depending on your own character. I would start by comparing the wattage to what you have right now. If it is similar and you are satisfied with the amount of light you currently have, then it will be sufficient. If you have 200 or 300 watts in your ceiling light currently, then you must consider that this fan will put out less light.
