Low, High or Vaulted Ceiling Installation Options

This ceiling fan can be installed on ceilings that are 8 or 9 feet high and can be angled up to 30 degrees without the need for any additional mounting hardware, so what is in the box will be sufficient. If you have a high ceiling or vaulted ceiling that is angled more than 30 degrees (or both), you may need a downrod or angled ceiling adapter in order to install your fan.

Minimum Ceiling Height Requirement: This fan requires a minimum ceiling height of at least 97.25" in order to meet building codes. If your ceiling is lower than 97.25" then you may need to add a flushmount adapter or close to ceiling dowrod if one is available for the fan (see below). If you cannot find what you need to make this fan work in your room, please give us a call so we can check to see if there are any further alternatives.

Note: This fan includes 3 1/2" and 6" downrods(s)

How does the Minka Aire Concept I 52 Wet Compare to the Average Ceiling Fan?

Ceiling Fan Comparison Graph
4
6,007
116
52
3.48
Breeze Rating: 4 (5 is best)
Wind Speed Factor: 3.48 MPH

Graph represents 52" blade span
How to read our graphs

Quality Rating = 4 (average is 3)
A Quality Rating of 4 is above average, the Minka Aire Concept I 52 Wet ceiling fan will run smooth and quiet and will give you many years of operation with no worries of the motor burning out.

Wind Speed Factor: 3.48 MPH (average is about 3)
A Wind Speed Factor of 3.48 MPH gives this fan a Breeze Rating of 4 out of 5. This is above average when it comes to ceiling fans, so you can expect to feel a decent amount of cooling breeze, but it is not the best. Aside from Quality, which accounts for smooth quiet operation and durability, the amount of wind-chill a fan can provide to cool you off is the most important consideration. Afterall, why do want a ceiling fan in the first place?

Airflow = 6007 CFM (average is about 5,000)
6007 CFM is a good amount of aiflow and is slightly above average. Although there are more powerful fans to choose from, the Minka Aire Concept I 52 Wet ceiling fan does a pretty good job of cooling you off if the room is not too large. This fan should allow you to raise your thermostat by 1 or 2 degrees to save between 5% and 15% on your cooling bills (if you have AC).

Efficiency Rating = 116 CFM/Watt (average is about 86)
An Efficiency Rating of 116 is well above average. Efficiency is defined by the EPA as the amount of airflow a fan produces (CFM) divided by the amount of electricity (Watts) it uses on high speed without any lights on. Efficiency is less important than Airflow because more CFMs allow you to raise your thermostat higher...which is where you will save the most energy. Efficiency becomes more important if you expect to operate several ceiling fans at the same time. (see calculator below)

Electrical Usage = 52 Watts (average is about 76)
52 Watts per hour is well below average, which is excellent because the Minka Aire Concept I 52 Wet will cost less to operate than the average ceiling fan. Use the calculator below to estimate just how much it will cost to operate this fan in "Your home".

Wind Speed Factor -vs- Efficiency: Wind Speed is KING! Ceiling fans can save you a lot on your energy bills if you use them properly to reduce your use of central air. Ceiling fans cool you off by creating a wind-chill effect, so the more wind speed a fan generates, the cooler it will make you feel. The cooler your ceiling fan can make you feel, the higher you can raise your AC thermostat to conserve energy without sacrificing your level of comfort. Raising your thermostat by 10 degrees can save you up to 40% on your cooling bills, but you cannot raise your thermostat by 10 degrees if you focus only on ceiling fans that use less energy rather than ones that generate higher wind speed. To put this in perspective: A typical central air system uses about 3500 Watts when it is running, so if a ceiling fan that uses 100 watts allows you to raise your thermostat a couple degrees higher than a more "efficient" fan that uses only 50 watts, the savings you will get by raising your AC therestat a couple degrees higher is far more than the difference of 50 watts between the two fans. With that said, a ceiling fan that uses less watts yet produces higher wind speed is a win-win.

Blade Span CFM Wind Speed MPH Wind Speed LFM Calculate
3.48 MPH
407.31 LFM
(Calculate the wind speed of a ceiling fan by plugging in the CFM and Blade Span above)

Fan Size -vs- Wind Speed -vs- CFM

Note: The formula for calculating wind speed was revised on 1/31/2015. The previous formula did not take into account that the testing chamber (cylinder) used to determine the CFM of a fan is 8" in diameter larger than the blade span. The revised formula ads 8" to the fan diameter to account for this. The wind speed results are now slightly lower than previosly stated

"When it comes to ceiling fan size...the largest fan with the highest wind speed that will look fine in the area is the best choice!"

Ceiling fans cool you off by creating a wind-chill effect, the degree of which is determined by the wind speed produced by the fan; the higher the wind speed, the cooler you feel. It is critical to know the following; CFM is not the same as wind speed; the wind chill effect you feel from a ceiling fan is concentrated in the column of air directly beneath the fan blades; the wind chill drops off dramatically just a foot or two outside that area.

Ceiling fan manufacturers are required by the DOE to publish the airflow of each fan in CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) which is not the same as wind speed. CFM is the volume of air being moved every minute, whereas wind speed how fast the air is moving in MPH (Miles per Hour) or LFM (Linear Feet per Minute), both of which are directly related to the amount of wind chill effect. When you compare two fans that are different sizes yet have the same CFM you will find they produce quite different wind speeds. The smaller fan must move air faster in order to move the same amount of air per minute (CFM) as the larger fan. The airflow generated by the smaller creates more wind chill because it is more concentrated and has a higher wind speed. The larger fan of equal CFM moves air over a larger area so it is less concentrated at a lower wind speed. So when determining what size fan to buy you must consider the amount of space a fan will cover (the diameter of the fan plus a foot or two), the intensity of the airflow directly beneath the fan (the wind speed) balanced with how any particular size fan will look or fit in the space. Ultimately the largest fan with the highest wind speed that will look fine in the area is the best choice for performance.

The required testing method for ceiling fans is not done in a way that translates well to real world applications, so the CFM data can be somewhat deceiving if you do not know how to interpret it.

The current required test procedure (shown left) shows a ceiling fan hanging above a 3 foot tall metal cylinder that is 8 inches wider than the ceiling fan (blade span) and stands 4 feet above the floor. Sensors are located at the bottom of the cylinder to measure the wind speed. The wind speed is then converted into CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute). Although this testing procedure can be valuable for comparing the performance of fans equal in size, it does not emulate a real application inside a home and does not make it easy to compare fans that are different sizes in order to determine the best size fan(s) for any particular application.

Therefore, the best way to compare the actual performance between fans of various sizes is to compare the wind speed. The wind speed of a ceiling fan can be mathematically calculated based on the CFM and Blade Span. Here is a comparison where we performed the calculations between 3 fans of different blade spans and CFMs. The largest fan has the highest CFM yet the smallest fan produces the highest wind speed.

84" Fan with CFM of 10000 produces wind speed of 2.46 MPH (216.62 LFM)
52" Fan with CFM of 6500 produces wind speed of 3.76 MPH (331.04 LFM )

The above example shows how deceiving CFM data can be. Even though the 52" fan moves 35% less air than the 84" fan, the intensity of the breeze that produces a wind-chill effect is over 50% more than that of the larger fan and will make you feel much cooler if you are directly beneath it. So, to cover a larger area, two or more smaller fans with good performance may be a better choice than a single large higher CFM fan.

**Light Fixture Note
Important Note: Due to government legislation regarding the efficiency and wattage ceiling fan light fixtures (EPACT 2005) the fixture you receive may use a different bulb than what is described. This is because most manufacturers have rolling changes in their inventory in order to bring their fixtures into compliance, so there is no way to know which fixture the manufacturer will ship until all of their old inventory has been depleted. Most fixtures that used Medium Base Bulbs in the past will be changed to use Candelabra Base Bulbs. Also, since the legislation mandates that the total wattage of a ceiling fan light cannot exceed 190Watts, the maximium wattage of the bulbs may be lowered to meet this criteria and will most likely have a limiting fuse designed to trigger if you use bulbs that exceed this wattage.

EDITORS PICK
F577-BNW Minka Aire Concept I Wet Ceiling Fan

Minka Aire Concept I Wet Outdoor ceiling fan The Minka Aire Concept I Wet Rated Outdoor Ceiling Fan has earned deserved recognition as one of my "Editors Picks", which means that I believe it is one of the best fans you can buy, particularly if you are in need of a ceiling fan for outoors.

The Concept I "Wet" ceiling fan is the first truly sleek contemporary styled outdoor ceiling fan that can actually be directly exposed to rain. That means you can install it in an uncovered patio, gazebo, lanai or any other outdoor setting covered or not.

Rain, wind, snow or blazing heat, Minka Aire has designed this fan to survive. Even if your outdoor setting is covered, you will love the fact that you can clean it off by blasting it with your garden hose. Now that's a feature that I really like!

The Concept I outdoor ceiling fan comes with a built-in wall control system that gives you 3 speeds forward, 3 speeds in reverse and a full range light dimmer. And for those who prefer a fan without lights, it comes with a matching bottom cap that allows you to install it that way.

But what's even more appealing than the appearance and ability to handle harsh environments is the actual performance of the fan. The unique air foil type convex blades are turned by a very powerful 188mm x 20mm motor. This gives the fan the ability to produce a hefty breeze that will not only help cool you off, but ward off pesty flies and other bugs making your life less miserable as you sweat out the summer heat and enjoy yourself outdoors.

The blades are made of a very sturdy ABS plastic that can withstand the torturous rigors of the seasons without warping, bending or cracking. Even more, the blades are attched directly to the motor housing instead of being attached with flimsy pot metal blade holders that can break during a wind storm. Now this might not mean anything to you at first, but if you live in a windy climate, you may have already owned a ceiling fan where the blades broke off and went flying into your neighbors yard on a windy day.

I'm not suggesting that the Concept I ceiling fan can withstand a class 4 hurricane, but if any fan was going to survive such an ordeal, it would either be the Concept I, or the Concept II, which is a flushmount version of this fan.

I give the Minka Aire Concept I Wet a 5 star rating when it comes to outdoor ceiling fans. Great quality, great performance, very durable...and not too expensive.

QUESTION: 2 questions about model Minka Aire Concept I 52 Wet Ceiling Fan Model F577-BNW 1) I am right next to the sea. Is this rust free? 2) I live in Greenwich CT. Is there a place where I can see those fans?

ANSWER: Actually, there are no ceiling fans that are 100% rust free. The best you can expect are fans that are the most resistant to rust. We have several recommendations and more information about this on our Outdoor Ceiling Fans page here. The Minka Aire Concept I Wet fans are among those we most recommend for salt air environments.

We are an Internet only company, so we do not have a list of retail competitors that we can refer you to. However, the Minka Aire Concept fans do fall under our VIP guarantee program, so if you do not like the looks of the fan when you receive it, we will take it back and give you a 100% refund. You can read details about our VIP Guarantee here!

QUESTION: Electricity feeding the porch is controlled by a switch which presently controls outdoor lighting. I will to feed the fan from the same switch so I assume I will need to control the fan from a remote control and not a wall switch. Is this possible? I am considering the Minka Aire Concept 52 I or II

ANSWER: Not a problem..you can purchase a remote control separately that will operate the Minka Aire Concept I and II Wet Outdoor ceiling fans. Just click on the button for "Controls" on the product detail page of either fan and you will see the remote control option. Keep in mind that Minka Aire does not have a Wet rating on the remote transmitter, so you do not want to get it wet or leave it outside. So basically, store the remote transmitter indoors when you are not outside using it.

QUESTION: Request your advice re proposed quantity and ceiling location for ceiling fan installation on a screened porch. The porch is attached to the house on one sde and open on the remaining three sides. The porch has a roof, 8 ft ceiling and dimensions of 24 ft x 27 ft. I propose to install 2 Minka Concept I F577 fans on the 24 ft centerline and spaced 9 ft from each open side in the 27 ft direction. Thanks.

ANSWER: If you stick with the Concept I ceiling fans, I would recommend 2 rows of 3 fans (6 Concept I ceiling fans total). Each row should be 6 feet in from the 24 foot sides. The fans on the end of the 27 foot length should be 4 1/2 feet from the end and the other 2 fans should be centered at 13 1/2 feet. This would provide optimal comfort in the area when using 52" ceiling fans like the Concept I. You may compromise by using only 4 fans installed in 2 rows. If you wish to stick with just 2 fans, then you should consider using larger diameter ceiling fans that are capable of moving more air over a wider area (60" ceiling fans would be preferable). Use this link to locate The Largest Most Powerful Outdoor Ceiling Fans. Be aware that some of the 60" outdoor fans require ceilings higher than 8 feet, so you if you need help finding the best options just give us a call.

QUESTION: 1. Is there any reason not to use the outdoor rated fan indoors? E.g. is it noisier? 2. Does the wall control include ability to reverse fan direction (both indoor and outdoor models)

ANSWER: The wall control does have the ability to reverse the fan direction in both indoor and outdoor models. There is no technical reason at all not to use any outdoor ceiling fan indoors. As a matter of fact, it is recommended that outdoor rated fans be used indoors in climates that with high humidity as well as indoor areas where there is excessive moisture such as bathrooms and laundry rooms.

The only downside would be that outdoor fans that have a similar equivalent model that is not rated for outdoors are generally slightly more expensive due to the additional components and requirements necessary to make the fans capable of handling moisture. Extra wire shielding, stainless steel components and more water tight construction add to the cost of the fan.
