Description
Shown in picture: Hunter Classic Original Ceiling Fan Model 23856 in White. Matte White Blades are included as shown. Comes with 3 Speed Pull Chain

The Hunter Original series of fans has the most powerful and durable ceiling fan motor on the market and is the only fan with this much power that is EnergyStar qualified. The Classic Original is a fan that has changed little in decades and is truly the most classic traditional style ceiling fan available. Featuring the most durable rugged cast-iron construction, the Original series of ceiling fans from Hunter are still the only fans on the market that can actually be oiled. There are original models that are over 50 years old which are still functioning like new in peoples homes across the country. Although the Classic Original fans come with 5 blades, you can install 4 or 5 depending on your taste. Installing 4 blades would be in keeping with the classic style of the older original fans.

Low, High or Vaulted Ceiling Installation Options
This ceiling fan can be installed on ceilings that are 8 or 9 feet high and can be angled up to 30 degrees without the need for any additional mounting hardware, so what is in the box will be sufficient. If you have a high ceiling or vaulted ceiling that is angled more than 30 degrees (or both), you may need a downrod or angled ceiling adapter in order to install your fan.

Minimum Ceiling Height Requirement: This fan requires a minimum ceiling height of at least 95.83" in order to meet building codes. If your ceiling is lower than 95.83" then you may need to add a flushmount adapter or close to ceiling dowrod if one is available for the fan (see below). If you cannot find what you need to make this fan work in your room, please give us a call so we can check to see if there are any further alternatives.

Hunter Classic Original Ceiling Fan Comparison Review

How does the Hunter Classic Original Compare to the Average Ceiling Fan?

Quality Rating = 5 (average is 3)
With a Quality Rating of 5, the Hunter Classic Original is among the finest quality ceiling fans made. It will run smooth and quiet without wobbling or making noise and you can let it run 24 hours a day for years on end without any worries of the motor burning out.

Airflow = 6947 CFM (average is about 5755)
6947 CFM is a good amount of aiflow and is above average. We highly recommend ceiling fans that move at least this amount of air in order to provide enough wind chill effect to keep you cool. the Hunter Classic Original will allow you to raise your thermostat by several degrees, which will help you save additional money on your cooling bills.

Efficiency Rating = 80 CFM/Watt (average is about 86)
An Efficiency Rating of 80 is fairly average. Efficiency is defined by the EPA as the amount of airflow a fan produces (CFM) divided by the amount of electricity (Watts) it uses on high speed without any lights on. Efficiency is less important than Airflow because more CFMs allow you to raise your thermostat higher...which is where you will save the most energy. Efficiency becomes more important if you expect to operate several ceiling fans at the same time. (see calculator below)

Electrical Usage = 87 Watts (average is about 76)
87 Watts per hour is higher than average, so the Hunter Classic Original costs a little more to operate than other fans. Use the calculator below to estimate just how much it will cost to operate this fan in "Your home".

CFM -vs- Efficiency: CFM is KING! It is more important to buy a fan with higher CFMs than it is to buy a fan that uses less electricity. The highest wattage consumed by the most energy guzzling ceiling fan on our website is about 120 watts. So if you input 120 as the fan watts and run our calculator, you will see that it still costs less than 2 cents per hour to operate the most energy guzzling ceiling fan in most states. You will get more savings with a higher CFM fan than a lower Wattage fan because if your fan moves more air you will be able to raise your thermostat to a higher degree. Raising your thermostat by 10 degrees can save you up to 40% on your cooling bills. Choosing a less powerful fan because it uses less electricity can be the worst mistake you can make because it will not cool you off enough to allow you to raise your thermostat to a high enough level without becoming uncomfortable. This is why CFM is so much more important to consider than Wattage.

    is oil already in 23856

Answer: The Hunter Original ceiling fans do NOT come with the oil already in the oil bath. The oil is in the box in a tube and needs to be added after the fan has been is installed. The way the fan is designed, the oil would spill out if it was put in at the factory. A word of caution...when removing a hunter original fan from the ceiling, always keep it in an upright position, otherwise the oil will in fact spill out and make quite a mess.

I recently bought five Hunter The Classic Originals, and I have experience hanging these fans new out of the box. But these are take-downs, and they have the oil already in them. When re-hanging them in a new location, do I have to remove the blades before the re-hang, and how do I prevent oil from spilling out if I tilt them to place them in the brackets? Or, do I just drain the oil and recharge them with fresh? Thanks, David Morris

Answer: You can plug the hole where you put the oil in with some tape or anyting that fits tightly into the hole so that when you tilt the fan, the oil does not run out. We always remove the blades and set the fan body in a box that keeps it standing upright when we move Hunter Original fans from one location to another. These fans are heavy and awkward to hang, so taking the blades off will make your job easier and prefent you from accidentally bending a blade iron or two. It is easy to install the blades when the fan is hanging if you use an electric screw driver. We do suggest that you mark the blade locations before you remove them to ensure your fan remains balanced as it was before.

Can you tell me what kind of motor the today's Original uses? Thanks

Answer: The Original motor was redesigned several years ago when Hunter closed down the production of this fan in the USA and moved it to mainland China. However, in principle it is very similar in that it uses a cast iron motor housing to help dicipate heat, has a large diameter flywheel that the blades directly attach to, and still uses the oil bath system...which makes it still the only fan on the market that you can oil. They did however increase the efficiency of the motor, so it delivers the same high power, but with less electricity...a change long overdue.
