What to look for in a ceiling fan

What are these Ceiling Fan Comparison Graphs?

As of January 1, 2009, all ceiling fan manufacturers are required to test and publish data regarding the performance of their fans. Specifically, the CFMs (Cubic Feet per Minute of Airflow), the Watts (amount of electricity used per hour) and the Efficiency (EPA defines as CFM/Watts).

We have added this new information to our previous rating system and come up with an even better method of comparing ceiling fans. These new "Comparison Graphs" allow you to easily compare ceiling fans at a glance. Once you understand how to interpret these graphs, it becomes quite easy to compare the perforance of any fan on our site at a glance.

Read more details about this topic here at: Who Makes the Best Ceiling Fans - The Online Guide to Comparing Ceiling Fans!

CFM = Cubic Feet of Airflow per Minute | Efficiency = CFM/Watts | Quality = 1 to 5 where 5 is best

Fans with the highest CFM rating move the most air so they will keep you the coolest. The more CFMs your fan can produce, the less you will use your air conditioning (which can save you lots of money). Simply put, fans with the highest CFM will save the most on your cooling bills.

Ceiling fans cool you off by creating a wind chill effect, they do not change the actual temperature in a room. Ceiling Fans with higher Wind Speed will create the most wind chill effect. The Wind Speed is the calculated measure of the expected wind velocity in the column of air directly beneath the span of the blades, so it takes into consideration the CFMs and the Blade Span of a fan.

Fans with the highest Quality Rating (4 or 5) have superior precision made components, so they tend not to wobble or make noise and can be left running for long periods of time (days on end) without breaking down. So your challenge is to find a ceiling fan that looks good to you, is the right size for your room, has the highest CFM and Quality ratings, yet still fits within your budget.

Hansen Wholesale is the only website that gives you all the tools you need to make this happen...quickly and easily.

CFM is defined as Cubic Feet per Minute. The CFM of a ceiling fan is determined by a standardized test adpoted by the EPA. As of January 1st 2009, all manufacturers are required to test their fans and provide this information to dealers and consumers.

Wind Speed: To make it easier for you to compare fans of various CFM and blade spans, we calculate the wind speed of the air colum below the fan. This calculation is based on the CFMs per square foot of blade span, and then converted to Miles Per Hour. Ceiling fans cool you off by creating a wind chill effect, not by changing the temperature in a room. The breeze created by a ceiling fan is mostly concentrated in the column of air just beneath the blades. Two fans that generate the same CFM but have different blade spans will cool you off differently. A larger fan will have a wider column of air that is less concentrated (lower wind speed) than a smaller fan. So the smaller fan will make you feel cooler when you are directly beneath it, while the larger fan will provide less breeze, but spread it over a larger area. So when see a fan that has a very high CFM, be sure to look at the blade span and wind speed as well to see how they compare to other fans.

Quality Rating is from 1 to 5 where 5 is the very best. This is a more subjective score that we devised ourselves to rate ceiling fans before the EPA began requiring manufacturers to publish performance data. Although this rating does consider the CFMs produced by a fan, it also considers the quality of the components used to make the fan. So you will find fans with high CFM ratings, yet have lower Quality ratings and visa-versa.

Averages: It is good to know what the average performance and quality of every fan is so that you can get a better feel for what these numbers mean. If you stick with fans that are above average, then you will be more satisfied and visa-versa. These averages are calculated every time this page loads, so as we add or discontinue fans from our site, it is real data dynamically generated, not typed in by someone who could make an error or fudge it.

Out of 1607 fans on our site that have performance data available, here are some averages:

  • Average CFM = 5,569 CFM
  • Average Watts = 73.84 Watts
  • Average Efficiency = 75.42 CFM/Watts
  • Average Quality Rating = 3.00
  • Average Price = $300.20

Here are the averages for all 245 fans that have a quality rating of 5:

  • Average CFM = 6,370 CFM
  • Average Watts = 99.58 Watts
  • Average Efficiency = 63.97 CFM/Watts
  • Average Quality Rating = 4.00
  • Average Price = $374.42

Here are the averages for all 202 fans that have a quality rating of 2:

  • Average CFM = 4,563 CFM
  • Average Watts = 60.37 Watts
  • Average Efficiency = 75.58 CFM/Watts
  • Average Quality Rating = 2.00
  • Average Price = $172.29

Room Size and CFM Chart

Although the EPA now requires fan manufacturers to publish the CFM ratings of their fans, there is no standardized scientific method of determining what size and CFM fan is best for any given application. A few quick searches and you will find that each ceiling fan manufacturer interprets this differently. So we created our won size and CFM recommendation chart to give you an idea what we recommend for "typical" applications. We produced this chart based on over 20 years of experience dealing with ceiling fans and the people who we've sold them to. For the most part, this chart will suffice. If you have low ceilings, you can fudge a little on the CFM and use a fan in the lesser range of the room size. If you have high ceilings, you need more CFM and a fan closer to the larger size of the chart. In most cases, the more the CFM the better and the higher the quality score the better!

If you are not sure what to do, just call and talk to our ceiling fan experts at 1-800-201-1193

Thank you so much for answering my questions. I have one more. This fan is reversible so i need a remote that can reverse the spin. i think that the one remote option for this fan will reverse the spin but im not thrilled about spending $114. Do the universal remotes they sell in home depot work for this fan?

Answer: The CK300 optional remote control for the Montecarlo Cyclone will in fact reverse the fan. One of the main reasons that the control is more expensive than a typical universal remote control is because it does in fact have a reverse function designed to work with this particular fan. Most universal remote controls sold at home centers DO NOT have a reverse function. We do not advise using such controls on fans like this because they generally are not designed well and may not be able to handle the amperage of a larger more powerful fan like the Cyclone. Plus, using a control not specifically designed for this fan will VOID the warranty. The control is worth the extra money as it is higher quality and will be problem free for many years. Controls sold at mass merchants are very unreliable and tend to last only a year or two...and sometimes do not work from the beginning.

would wnat to use this fan in a two story family room, would you recommenfd this fan for indoor use? can this fan be used with a 12" downrod? does it come with a remote control or is it universal remote control compatible? thank you

Answer: All outdoor ceiling fans can be used indoors, so there is no reason why you cannot install the Montecarlo Cyclone ceiling fan in your family room. You can certainly install it with a 12" downrod and you can purchase an optional control to operate the fan. You can add both of these options to your ceiling fan configuration by clicking on the appropriate buttons just below the main fan picture on the product page...or just give us a call and we will get you exactly what you need.

I also see that it comes in a semi flush mounted version. How many CFM are lost in this version? What are the minimum ceiling high requirement for the semi flush mounted version

Answer: Downrods for Montecarlo ceiling fans are not designed to be cut, nor would I recommend attempting to do so. The pipes are threaded before the finish is applied and the threaded ends have a bevel just before the threads begin, so attempting to cut and re-thread is not a good idea.

When it comes to the performance of a standard mounted fan installed with an optional flush mount adapter, to the best of my knowledge, no tests have been published for any ceiling fans installed with an optional flushmount adapter from any brand including Monte Carlo. So there is no specific data that I can refer to in order to answer your question other than the fact that when you stand under a fan installed in such a way, you simply feel less air. My somewhat educated guess would be somewhere around a 20 to 30 percent loss of performance. For fans with Higher CFM ratings, such as the Maxima, there is also a good possibility that the fan will shudder or vibrate on high speed when flush mounted due to the amount of air that bounces between the ceiling and blades because it cannot flow freely around them. This is why we recommend choosing a good quality hugger fan instead of flush mounting a standard fan.

A well designed hugger fan has different mounting hardware designed specifically to overcome vibration issues and the best flush mount fans are designed to move more air as well. If you compare the performance ratings (CFM and Wind Speed) between the various flushmount fans on our site, you will notice a wide range in performance, so look for the ones with the highest CFM and Wind Speed. Give us a call and we will be happy to make some recommendations.

I need to be able to control AND reverse the fan direction, fan speed, and light from a wall switch, as it will be mounted in a 3 story high cupola. Does the control that comes with this fan also REVERSE the fan's direction from the wall switch? Please advise at your earliest. Thanks!

Answer: The wall control and remote control that are included with the Montecarlo Lunar ceiling fans both have a reverse function. So yes, you can reverse the fan from the wall switch.

We want to order one Montecarlo 5WF52RB Weatherford Ceiling Fan and one Montecarlo MC-5WF42RB Weatherford II Ceiling Fan. Both indicate that they are Roman Bronze with a walnut blade. Are the fans identical (except for size)? The descriptions indicate that they are the same but the photos look quite different.

Answer: Montecarlo Weatherford model 5WF52RB is a 52" fan. Model MC-5WF42RB is a 42" fan. The finishes and blade colors are actually the same, so if you are looking for matching larger and smaller fans for your home, these will work. The photos look slightly different due to variations in lighting when the manufacturer took the pictures.

Please explain why the motor rating is 3 for this fan. It is a DC motor, which should be considered top notch technology. It only use 3 watt at low speed setting.

Answer: After reading your question and reviewing the data for the Montecarlo Versio ceiling fan, I have decided to upgrade the motor quality rating to 4 instead of 3. I originally had it rated between 3 and 4, but rounded down to the lesser rating due to the lower than average airflow that the fan produces. However, the airflow and energy consumption are in fact separate ratings and the DC motor is newer technology. So thank you for your question, it was an incentive for met to give the fan further consideration.

I am looking for a remote control for a Monte Carlo contemporary fan that has a dual lighting control. I bought the fan @ Home Depot about 3 years ago. Thay said the fan was not avaliable any more. Where can I find the remote control?

Answer: I need to know the model number of your Montecarlo ceiling fan. In some cases, Montecarlo will make models exclusively for Home Depot and other mass merchants that are not compatible with components that are available for their normal line of fans. Please get back to us with the model number so we can make the determination.
