Floor Fans and Pedestal Fans - Decorative and Functional

These top of the line decorative floor fans and pedestal fans are not the ordinary floor fans you see at the home centers and department stores. These are highly decorative floor fans with high performance motors that will cool you off better and look great too. The designs of some of these models is very unique with intricate detail and intersting pedestals. The Hearst Castle from Minka Aire, the Old Havana from Fanimation and the Zephair from Casablana are most notworthy and are not the type of floor fan that you stash in the closet when you are not using them.

What to look for in a ceiling fan

What are these Ceiling Fan Comparison Graphs?

As of January 1, 2009, all ceiling fan manufacturers are required to test and publish data regarding the performance of their fans. Specifically, the CFMs (Cubic Feet per Minute of Airflow), the Watts (amount of electricity used per hour) and the Efficiency (EPA defines as CFM/Watts).

We have added this new information to our previous rating system and come up with an even better method of comparing ceiling fans. These new "Comparison Graphs" allow you to easily compare ceiling fans at a glance. Once you understand how to interpret these graphs, it becomes quite easy to compare the perforance of any fan on our site at a glance.

CFM = Cubic Feet of Airflow per Minute | Efficiency = CFM/Watts | Quality = 1 to 5 where 5 is best

Fans with the highest CFM rating move the most air so they will keep you the coolest. The more CFMs your fan can produce, the less you will use your air conditioning (which can save you lots of money). Simply put, fans with the highest CFM will save the most on your cooling bills.

Ceiling fans cool you off by creating a wind chill effect, they do not change the actual temperature in a room. Ceiling Fans with higher Wind Speed will create the most wind chill effect. The Wind Speed is the calculated measure of the expected wind velocity in the column of air directly beneath the span of the blades, so it takes into consideration the CFMs and the Blade Span of a fan.

Fans with the highest Quality Rating (4 or 5) have superior precision made components, so they tend not to wobble or make noise and can be left running for long periods of time (days on end) without breaking down. So your challenge is to find a ceiling fan that looks good to you, is the right size for your room, has the highest CFM and Quality ratings, yet still fits within your budget.

Hansen Wholesale is the only website that gives you all the tools you need to make this happen...quickly and easily.

CFM is defined as Cubic Feet per Minute. The CFM of a ceiling fan is determined by a standardized test adpoted by the EPA. As of January 1st 2009, all manufacturers are required to test their fans and provide this information to dealers and consumers.

Wind Speed: To make it easier for you to compare fans of various CFM and blade spans, we calculate the wind speed of the air colum below the fan. This calculation is based on the CFMs per square foot of blade span, and then converted to Miles Per Hour. Ceiling fans cool you off by creating a wind chill effect, not by changing the temperature in a room. The breeze created by a ceiling fan is mostly concentrated in the column of air just beneath the blades. Two fans that generate the same CFM but have different blade spans will cool you off differently. A larger fan will have a wider column of air that is less concentrated (lower wind speed) than a smaller fan. So the smaller fan will make you feel cooler when you are directly beneath it, while the larger fan will provide less breeze, but spread it over a larger area. So when see a fan that has a very high CFM, be sure to look at the blade span and wind speed as well to see how they compare to other fans.

Quality Rating is from 1 to 5 where 5 is the very best. This is a more subjective score that we devised ourselves to rate ceiling fans before the EPA began requiring manufacturers to publish performance data. Although this rating does consider the CFMs produced by a fan, it also considers the quality of the components used to make the fan. So you will find fans with high CFM ratings, yet have lower Quality ratings and visa-versa.

Averages: It is good to know what the average performance and quality of every fan is so that you can get a better feel for what these numbers mean. If you stick with fans that are above average, then you will be more satisfied and visa-versa. These averages are calculated every time this page loads, so as we add or discontinue fans from our site, it is real data dynamically generated, not typed in by someone who could make an error or fudge it.

Out of 1607 fans on our site that have performance data available, here are some averages:

  • Average CFM = 5,569 CFM
  • Average Watts = 73.84 Watts
  • Average Efficiency = 75.42 CFM/Watts
  • Average Quality Rating = 3.00
  • Average Price = $300.20

Here are the averages for all 245 fans that have a quality rating of 5:

  • Average CFM = 6,370 CFM
  • Average Watts = 99.58 Watts
  • Average Efficiency = 63.97 CFM/Watts
  • Average Quality Rating = 4.00
  • Average Price = $374.42

Here are the averages for all 202 fans that have a quality rating of 2:

  • Average CFM = 4,563 CFM
  • Average Watts = 60.37 Watts
  • Average Efficiency = 75.58 CFM/Watts
  • Average Quality Rating = 2.00
  • Average Price = $172.29

Room Size and CFM Chart

Although the EPA now requires fan manufacturers to publish the CFM ratings of their fans, there is no standardized scientific method of determining what size and CFM fan is best for any given application. A few quick searches and you will find that each ceiling fan manufacturer interprets this differently. So we created our won size and CFM recommendation chart to give you an idea what we recommend for "typical" applications. We produced this chart based on over 20 years of experience dealing with ceiling fans and the people who we've sold them to. For the most part, this chart will suffice. If you have low ceilings, you can fudge a little on the CFM and use a fan in the lesser range of the room size. If you have high ceilings, you need more CFM and a fan closer to the larger size of the chart. In most cases, the more the CFM the better and the higher the quality score the better!

This page as well as others for the Panama says that it comes with a Flushmount Adapter. Is this true?

Answer: Our mistake, the Casablanca Panama ceiling fans can be flush mounted, but the adapter (model LCA) is sold separately. You can add the adapter to your ceiling fan by clicking on the "Other Stuff" button beneath the fan picture at the top of the product detail page.

Ceiling Fans Question - Minka Aire Concept II 44 Model F518-BN

View Concept II 44 model F518-BN

Can this fan (Minka Aire Concept II 44 Ceiling Fan Model F518-BN) work with both the remote that ships with the fan and a wall switch? I want to use my existing double wall switch (1 controls the light and the ohter controls the fan). With this fan I would like to use one switch to control the light and the other to control the fan (3 speeds plus on and off). If so, I assume I can use a regular on and off switch for the light.....can you recommned a seperate switch for the fan control.

Answer: The Minka Aire Concept ceiling fans are remote controlled fans, therefore they have a receiver unit inside the fan that controls the electricity between the fan motor and the lights. You cannot use the type of wall controls that you have to operate the fan. Minka does make an optional wall control model WC212 that will communicate with the built-in receiver, so you can use it in conjunction with the remote control or by itself. This specialized control operates using radio frequency just like the hand held transmitter does and it fits into a single gang box and uses a single hot wire. So if you want to use the wall control in your setup, you would cap off the wires in one of your existing wall switches and install the Minka WC212 in place of the other.

I want a 70inch Hunter Grand Vista Ceiling fan

Answer: The Hunter Grand Vista is not a Hunter ceiling fan that we sell or recommend. It is not part of the normal line of Hunter ceiling fans, and I am fairly certain that it is sold only by Lowes, who imports them directly from China once a year.

I suggest you consider the Hunter Stockbridge Ceiling Fan Model 23963, which is almost identical in style to the Grand Vista and is part of the normal line of Hunter ceiling fan products. This means it is more readily available and less likely to have replacement parts discontinued, making it better choice over the long run.

I have vaulted cielings looking for a high speed air flow fan what is the best fan for the price today that moves the most air thanks looking for something in dark wood.

Answer: By default, our Ceiling Fan Search Results are sorted by Highest Quality and Highest CFM, which will automatically show you the ceiling fans we recommend the most. You can then narrow your search by selecting from various other options on the left side of the page including price ranges. The fan I recommend the most is the first fan that comes up in our search, which is the Casablanca Atria that sells for over $600.00. The Atria is the best of the best and is worth every penny because of the amount of air it moves and how steady and quiet it performs. A powerful fan that runs steady without wobbling is particularly important for high vaulted ceilings where a long downrod is necessary. Actually, any of the top 30 fans that show up automatically in our search will be great, so just compare the price - vs - the CFM rating to find the fan that suits you best. If you give us a call us we can help you narrow down your choices quickly and offer more specific recommendations based on your input during our conversation.

I will be controlling Modern Fan Co #PHA52NKINNC with exiting seperate wall switches for fan and light (fan speed control and dimmer) and wanted to verify that the fan itself has 3 wire control for fan and light. It looks like the ordering nomenclature would include at the end of the part number 002 rather than NC? Just wanted to be sure that the fan would ship with 3 wire. Thanks for your help,

Answer: The Modern Fan Company Pharos ceiling fan does in fact come with 3 wires, so it will work with a setup as you have described where there are 2 separate switches on the wall...one to control the fan speeds and one for the light. If you order the fan just as is on our site, it will come to you ready to install in that manner. No controls are included with the fan, so you will not need to add any controls in your case since you already have them.

I am looking for an damp-rated fan which has a 52" span, can take a 36" extender pole, has a remote control, and a light kit capability. If possible I would like to be able to dim the light. This fan will be used on a screened porch. Which of your fans do you recommend?

Answer: I would highly recommend The Minka Aire Concept I Wet Rated Outdoor Ceiling Fan. This highly functional ceiling fan comes a light fixture and a built-in wall control, but you can purchase an optional remote control. The optional remote control will give you 3 speeds in forward and reverse and a full range light dimmer. You can purchase a 3 foot downrod separately as well. It has been our top selling outdoor ceiling fan for the last several years.

What remote control unit would you recommend for the Hunter Sea Wind fan? Using it on a lanai...cannto wire in direct on off switch, only straight AC. Your site and proces are great...will probably order from you.

Answer: The Hunter Remote Control Model 27185 is the only remote control that is compatible with the Hunter Sea Wind ceiling fans. Keep in mind that the remote transmitter is not designed for damp or wet locations (no ceiling fan remotes are), so be sure to keep it indoors when not in use. Also, if your Lanai is not completely covered, the Hunter Sea Wind fans are not rated for Wet locations, so keep that in mind.

Regardless, I would suggest you consider The Minka Aire Concept II Wet, which is our top selling outdoor ceiling fan and is perfect for a Lanai. It is a much better fan and and can handle both damp and wet locations as well as higher winds. It is a much more powerful ceiling fan and moves more than twice as much air as the Hunter Sea Wind, while using less electricity...so it is quite a bit more efficient as well. The Hunter Sea Wind only generates 2813 CFM, which is not enough to keep bugs away, muchless cool you off unless you are directly beneath it. The Minka Aire Concept II generates 5700 CFM (203% more airflow). The Concept fans come with a wall control, but you can purchase an optional remote control to use instead.

I have several bedrooms each ~11ftx12ft, 8ft ceilings and centered overhead light on a wall switch. I would like to replace them with high quality ceiling fans (with lights if possible). I like the Hunter 20810 but is it overkill? What would you recommend?

Answer: If you are looking for high quality ceiling fans that provide great airflow, I would recommend the Minka Aire Concept II 44" Ceiling Fans over the Hunter Low Profile III Plus. The Minka Aire fans are 44", which is a better size, but they move almost 60% more air...which is a huge difference. If you compare the Minka Aire 52" Concept II Ceiling Fans to the 52" Hunter Low Profile (which is comparing apples to apples), the 52" Concept II moves almost 220% more air! The Minka Aire Concept fans are higher quality, so they will run smoother and quieter. They are also more efficient, so even though they produce more airflow, they actually use less electricity. Because they are better fans, they will cost more, but the difference is well worth it!

Ceiling Fans Question - Casablanca S3 Model 93068M

    View S3 model 93068M
    View S3 model 93068M

What is the shortest downrod that can be used with the Casablanca S3 Ceiling Fan Model 93068M without reducing airflow. I have a 9 foot ceiling and want to verify that this fan will have enough clearance above the fan to not restrict air flow. I am looking for a fan for my home theater room. High CFM and low noise is very important. Noise is generated by the motor, vibration and air-flow. Which fan is best for High CFM and low noise. Any recommendations. Dan

Answer: If you choose the S3, you will get the best performance on a 9 foot ceiling if you use a 12" downrod. This will reduce the restriction of airflow between the blades and ceiling, which will result in increased airflow and less air noise. However, 3-blade ceiling fans generally move more air than equivalent 5-blade fans, but they also generate louder wind noise. So based on your criteria, I would not suggest a 3-bladed ceiling fan of any kind. You will sacrifice some airflow by going to a 5-blade fan, but the air noise will be substantially reduced.

With that said, my recommendation are listed below. These 3 ceiling fans are even higher quality than the S3 and are contemporary designs that are available in a black finish. They will be the quietest fans you can buy that move lots of air without vibration or wobble.

The Veneto is likely your best choice because a wider blade span will move air in a larger area with less air noise than smaller blades. If you choose the Veneto, use a 6" downrod. The other 2 fans should have a 12 inch downrod. The uplight feature included with the Veneto and Vita ceiling fans is also great for mood lighting in a theater room, particularly since they are dimmable and cast a warm glow on the ceiling.

Here is a link that will show All Contemporary Ceiling Fans in Black sorted by highest airflow. Any of the top 10 fans will be great, but stick with those that have 5 blades. You can change the filters on the search results page to fit your needs if you wish to explore other styles and finishes.
