What to look for in a ceiling fan

What are these Ceiling Fan Comparison Graphs?

As of January 1, 2009, all ceiling fan manufacturers are required to test and publish data regarding the performance of their fans. Specifically, the CFMs (Cubic Feet per Minute of Airflow), the Watts (amount of electricity used per hour) and the Efficiency (EPA defines as CFM/Watts).

We have added this new information to our previous rating system and come up with an even better method of comparing ceiling fans. These new "Comparison Graphs" allow you to easily compare ceiling fans at a glance. Once you understand how to interpret these graphs, it becomes quite easy to compare the perforance of any fan on our site at a glance.

CFM = Cubic Feet of Airflow per Minute | Efficiency = CFM/Watts | Quality = 1 to 5 where 5 is best

Fans with the highest CFM rating move the most air so they will keep you the coolest. The more CFMs your fan can produce, the less you will use your air conditioning (which can save you lots of money). Simply put, fans with the highest CFM will save the most on your cooling bills.

Ceiling fans cool you off by creating a wind chill effect, they do not change the actual temperature in a room. Ceiling Fans with higher Wind Speed will create the most wind chill effect. The Wind Speed is the calculated measure of the expected wind velocity in the column of air directly beneath the span of the blades, so it takes into consideration the CFMs and the Blade Span of a fan.

Fans with the highest Quality Rating (4 or 5) have superior precision made components, so they tend not to wobble or make noise and can be left running for long periods of time (days on end) without breaking down. So your challenge is to find a ceiling fan that looks good to you, is the right size for your room, has the highest CFM and Quality ratings, yet still fits within your budget.

Hansen Wholesale is the only website that gives you all the tools you need to make this happen...quickly and easily.

CFM is defined as Cubic Feet per Minute. The CFM of a ceiling fan is determined by a standardized test adpoted by the EPA. As of January 1st 2009, all manufacturers are required to test their fans and provide this information to dealers and consumers.

Wind Speed: To make it easier for you to compare fans of various CFM and blade spans, we calculate the wind speed of the air colum below the fan. This calculation is based on the CFMs per square foot of blade span, and then converted to Miles Per Hour. Ceiling fans cool you off by creating a wind chill effect, not by changing the temperature in a room. The breeze created by a ceiling fan is mostly concentrated in the column of air just beneath the blades. Two fans that generate the same CFM but have different blade spans will cool you off differently. A larger fan will have a wider column of air that is less concentrated (lower wind speed) than a smaller fan. So the smaller fan will make you feel cooler when you are directly beneath it, while the larger fan will provide less breeze, but spread it over a larger area. So when see a fan that has a very high CFM, be sure to look at the blade span and wind speed as well to see how they compare to other fans.

Quality Rating is from 1 to 5 where 5 is the very best. This is a more subjective score that we devised ourselves to rate ceiling fans before the EPA began requiring manufacturers to publish performance data. Although this rating does consider the CFMs produced by a fan, it also considers the quality of the components used to make the fan. So you will find fans with high CFM ratings, yet have lower Quality ratings and visa-versa.

Averages: It is good to know what the average performance and quality of every fan is so that you can get a better feel for what these numbers mean. If you stick with fans that are above average, then you will be more satisfied and visa-versa. These averages are calculated every time this page loads, so as we add or discontinue fans from our site, it is real data dynamically generated, not typed in by someone who could make an error or fudge it.

Out of 1607 fans on our site that have performance data available, here are some averages:

  • Average CFM = 5,569 CFM
  • Average Watts = 73.84 Watts
  • Average Efficiency = 75.42 CFM/Watts
  • Average Quality Rating = 3.00
  • Average Price = $300.20

Here are the averages for all 245 fans that have a quality rating of 5:

  • Average CFM = 6,370 CFM
  • Average Watts = 99.58 Watts
  • Average Efficiency = 63.97 CFM/Watts
  • Average Quality Rating = 4.00
  • Average Price = $374.42

Here are the averages for all 202 fans that have a quality rating of 2:

  • Average CFM = 4,563 CFM
  • Average Watts = 60.37 Watts
  • Average Efficiency = 75.58 CFM/Watts
  • Average Quality Rating = 2.00
  • Average Price = $172.29

Room Size and CFM Chart

Although the EPA now requires fan manufacturers to publish the CFM ratings of their fans, there is no standardized scientific method of determining what size and CFM fan is best for any given application. A few quick searches and you will find that each ceiling fan manufacturer interprets this differently. So we created our won size and CFM recommendation chart to give you an idea what we recommend for "typical" applications. We produced this chart based on over 20 years of experience dealing with ceiling fans and the people who we've sold them to. For the most part, this chart will suffice. If you have low ceilings, you can fudge a little on the CFM and use a fan in the lesser range of the room size. If you have high ceilings, you need more CFM and a fan closer to the larger size of the chart. In most cases, the more the CFM the better and the higher the quality score the better!

are these blades adptable to any 52 inch fan? Ihave a fan and would like to change out the blades with yours.

Answer: The blades for all Tommy Bahama ceiling fans are designed specifically for their fans and will not likely work on any other brand of ceiling fans. Most fan blades are not interchangeable between brands...and often between models of a brand. If you own one of the ceiling fans you see on our website, then take a look at the blade options that are available for that fan.

What buying recommendation would you make on a covered porch outdoor ceiling that may be subjected to 60 mph winds. We are looking at a tropical look. thanks, Jason

Answer: Not many outdoor ceiling fans are built to handle 60 mph wind speeds, especially if there are gusts that exceed that wind speed. So if you are truly set on a tropical style ceiling fan, the Tommy Bahama fans are probably your best choice since they have more substantial blade holders than most other brands. However, I would be prepared to remove the blades from the fan before you expect high winds, otherwise there still remains the potential that they can break off at the point where the blades are attached to the fan. If you are most concerned about buying a fan that can truly handle high winds and are willing to forgo the tropical theme, I would suggest taking a look at the Concept I and Concept II ceiling fans from Minka Aire which have blades that are directly inserted into the motor housing instead of being attached with blade holders. Outdoor ceiling fans such as the Concept fair the best in extremely high winds. Here are links to the Minka Aire: Concept I Wet and Concept II Wet Ceiling Fans.

Was wondering how bright the 50 watt halogen light is? Looking for a fan - light combo for the morning room. 50 watts is less than most ceiling fan lights but was wondering if the fact the light is halogen based makes it brighter? Thanks Brian

Answer: Halogen lights are brighter than incandescent lights. However, the lighting in this fan is meant to be accent lighting and will illuminate the vicinity beneath the fan, but should not expect the light to be used as the sole source of light in the room.

Are the up-lights and down lights controlled simultaneously by the same dimmer on the remote? Can the be adjusted individually? Can one be on and the other off? What is the smallest down rod this fan can use? Thanks again Brian

Answer: The Tommy Bahama Cabana ceiling fan control does in fact control the uplight and downlight independently. The standard downrod that ships with the fan is 6" long, which is the shortest downrod you can use. The hardware that comes with the fan (including the standard downrod) is designed for standard ceilings that are 8 to 9 feet high.

Is the airflow still a 5 with the narrow medium antique blades. How about with the tropical blades ? Or is the airflow best with the pineapple lane with standard looking wood blades? I prefer the lookd of the tropical blades or narrow antique blades, but need really high airflow.

Answer: The airflow is best with the traditional style normal looking blades. The long carved blades are second best and the palm style or wide oval shaped blades will perform the least. Since the fans are not tested with anything other than the standard blades, it is hard to give the others any type of rating. However, I will go out on a limb and say that the long carved blades would be 4 and the oval style blades would be 3.

Is there any concern with cutting the down rod (and re-drilling the set-pin hole) of either the TB-TB344CC or TB-TB344CW? While I know that other flush mount fans exist I would like to use one of these fans. Obviously if a flush mount kit exists I would use that instead.

Answer: The Bahama Breezes Ceiling from Tommy Bahama is designed to be installed on an 8 foot ceiling with the short downrod that comes with the fan. If your ceiling is not lower than 8 feet, then you should have no problem using this fan as is. Ceiling fans like this that have high performance motors should not be installed with the blades any closer to the ceiling than the minimum height provided by the standard downrod. The reason for this is because when you get the blades an inch or two closer to the ceiling, the air no longer flows natrually around the blades and can potentially begin to bounce up and down instead of going around. This can cause the fan to wobble or vibrate, as well as lose performance. Manufacturers of hugger fans generally overcome this issue by decreasing the size of the motor and flattening out the blades so that the fan does not move as much air. So, basically, most hugger fans will provide inferior performance. The most height you will save by cutting the downrod is about 1 1/2 inches, which is likely not enough to make a difference. Keeping these things in mind, I would not recommend cuttig the downrod. If your ceiling is in fact lower than 8 feet, then I would suggest looking at a different fan. How high is your ceiling?

How do the Bahama Breezes and the Castaway compare? Is it just a matter of style? Do these fans work just as well with "regular" blades as they do with the wide paddle-style blades?

Answer: As with any fan on the market that uses wider palm style or carved wood blades, these types of blades are more decorative than functional and will in fact decrease the performance of any ceiling fan dramatically compared to narrower standard style blades. So, with that said, when shopping for ceiling fans that have wide blade designs, whether it be palm leaf style or carved wood, you should look for fans that have the most powerful motors so that you will at least get some air movement from your fan. Tommy Bahama uses one of the most powerful and efficient fan motors on the market, which is the K55 motor made by Emerson Electric. Bottom line is, if you want the most air movement from your fan, use the narrower standard blades. If you are looking to make a design statement and are less concerned about the amount of airflow, choose the more decorative blades. Ultimately, Tommy Bahama fans are designed to make a design statement as well as give you the best performance and durability possible.

Will this fan work in a vaulted 15'X 22' sunken living room? Or do we need a larger than 52" fan?

Answer: 52" is a perfect size for this application. However, the room is large enough to need two fans. If 2 fans is not practical, I would still suggest this fan in a 52" size over a different fan with a larger blade span. Larger blades actually lower the circulation because they put more drag on the motor. A 50" or 52" with the Emerson K55 motor is fine tuned for maximum performance.
