Answer: The blades for all Tommy Bahama ceiling fans are designed specifically for their fans and will not likely work on any other brand of ceiling fans. Most fan blades are not interchangeable between brands...and often between models of a brand. If you own one of the ceiling fans you see on our website, then take a look at the blade options that are available for that fan.

Answer: Not many outdoor ceiling fans are built to handle 60 mph wind speeds, especially if there are gusts that exceed that wind speed. So if you are truly set on a tropical style ceiling fan, the Tommy Bahama fans are probably your best choice since they have more substantial blade holders than most other brands. However, I would be prepared to remove the blades from the fan before you expect high winds, otherwise there still remains the potential that they can break off at the point where the blades are attached to the fan. If you are most concerned about buying a fan that can truly handle high winds and are willing to forgo the tropical theme, I would suggest taking a look at the Concept I and Concept II ceiling fans from Minka Aire which have blades that are directly inserted into the motor housing instead of being attached with blade holders. Answer: Halogen lights are brighter than incandescent lights. However, the lighting in this fan is meant to be accent lighting and will illuminate the vicinity beneath the fan, but should not expect the light to be used as the sole source of light in the room.

Answer: The Tommy Bahama Cabana ceiling fan control does in fact control the uplight and downlight independently. The standard downrod that ships with the fan is 6" long, which is the shortest downrod you can use. The hardware that comes with the fan (including the standard downrod) is designed for standard ceilings that are 8 to 9 feet high.

Answer: The airflow is best with the traditional style normal looking blades. The long carved blades are second best and the palm style or wide oval shaped blades will perform the least. Since the fans are not tested with anything other than the standard blades, it is hard to give the others any type of rating. However, I will go out on a limb and say that the long carved blades would be 4 and the oval style blades would be 3.

Answer: The Bahama Breezes Ceiling from Tommy Bahama is designed to be installed on an 8 foot ceiling with the short downrod that comes with the fan. If your ceiling is not lower than 8 feet, then you should have no problem using this fan as is. Ceiling fans like this that have high performance motors should not be installed with the blades any closer to the ceiling than the minimum height provided by the standard downrod. The reason for this is because when you get the blades an inch or two closer to the ceiling, the air no longer flows natrually around the blades and can potentially begin to bounce up and down instead of going around. This can cause the fan to wobble or vibrate, as well as lose performance. Manufacturers of hugger fans generally overcome this issue by decreasing the size of the motor and flattening out the blades so that the fan does not move as much air. So, basically, most hugger fans will provide inferior performance. The most height you will save by cutting the downrod is about 1 1/2 inches, which is likely not enough to make a difference. Keeping these things in mind, I would not recommend cuttig the downrod. If your ceiling is in fact lower than 8 feet, then I would suggest looking at a different fan. How high is your ceiling?
