ENERGY STAR ceiling fans must meet quality and performance guidelines established by the EPA. They are generally about 20% more efficient than typical ceiling fans, although some models are far more efficient (such as the Emerson Midway Eco which is over 300% more efficient than most fans). Those that include light fixtures must either use energy efficient bulbs such as CFLs or candelabra bulbs that do not exceed a total of 190 watts.
