| Andirons are
one of the most essential decorative components of the fireplace.
Throughout history, every traditional fireplace had them.
The original purpose of
andirons was to hold the wood up off the hearth inside the fireplace
so that it would burn properly as well as help keep logs from
rolling out onto the floor.
Today, we often use a
grate instead, but in order to preserve the tradition of the
fireplace we still use andirons for their decorative appeal. Below

Most of these andirons
depicted here are reproductions from pieces that are in museums at
Colonial Williamsburg and other Early American historical sites.
Others are recreations
from even more rare pieces that have been purchased from estate
sales or antique auctions around the world.
For the most part, they
are crafted in much the same way as the originals, having been sand
cast and hand polished. The big difference is that these ones have
been treated with a baked on enamel finish so that you don't need to
polish them.
