1) can vented gas logs be vented by using a down draft to get to a crawl space and then vented out the side ?
Answer: Vented gas logs can only be used in an actual wood burning fireplace that is in fact capable of burning wood. The only exception would be outdoors in a fire pit.

I need a brass handle for what I think may be a Pilgrim screen. The brass plates that hold the two handles (one is missing) are about 4.25" x .75", and the distance between the balls that hold the ends of the handles is 3.5". Can I buy a handle?

Where are Dagan fireplace tools made...USA?
Answer: All Dagan fireplace accessories are made in China. Dagan was in fact one of the first USA companies to begin importing fireplace accessories from China, so they have long standing relationships with Chinese manufacturers, which enables them to get the highest quality products possible out of China at the lowest cost. Over the 25 years that I have been in the fireplace business, I have seen how mass merchants who import products directly from China have affected the many small USA companies that made fireplace accessories in the past. Almost all of the USA fireplace manufacturers have gone out of business...and those who have survived have either moved their entire manufacturing to China, or produce mostly custom made products that simply cannot be made overseas.
The most notable surviving USA fireplace accessory manufacturer is Portland Willamette. Portland Willamette specializes in custom made fireplace doors and screens and offers a wide variety of customized fireplace tools and other accessories to match. Most of their products are made of solid brass or forged steel and the quality is definitely superior, but 2 or 3 times the price of Chinese imports.
Unfortunately, they do not offer hand forged wrought iron pieces like the AHF222 Dagan toolset you saw on our site because the quality that Dagan has been able to produce in China has improved dramatically over the lasts 10 years. Similar firesets made in the USA would sell for $800 to $1500 compared to comparable quality sets that Dagan sells for $100 to $300. Portland Willamette wisely chooses not to compete in that arena.

Hi We have a gas fireplace that was converted from wood burning, No fire place insert, smaller fireplace, original to 1916 art and crafts home. Can I panel-over the vents in a "heatilator" fireplace ventilation system? If so, what is the best way to close the vents?
Answer: That depends on whether you are referring to a hand built heat circulating fireplace, a "Heatilator Brand" prefabricated fireplace, or some other factory made fireplace. If it is a hand-built masonry fireplace, then "Maybe" it is safe to cover the vents. In most cases it is "UNSAFE" to cover the vents because, in addition to circulating heat into the room, they may also be the only cooling mechanism for the firebox. So covering them could cause your fireplace to overheat, which creates a potential fire hazard. I have Majestic fireplace NVSR 42 for which I need a glass door set. I would prefer a zero clerance if possible

Is it possible for a homeowner to install a screen for a masonry fireplace with a granite surface? Will it be a problem if there is only 1" depth before the bricks & mortars lining begin to slant inwards?

I like this screen because it has doors the dimentions are good, but can you please let me know how stable it is when you have to open the doors to add wood to the fire? Is it grounded somehow? Just don't want it falling over when opening the doors! thanks
Answer: The screen is designed to be very stable with the doors opened or closed. It is not attached to the ground, but if you look closely at the legs, they are forward enough to keep it stable. I have tested it personally and know this to be true since I had the same concern when it was first introduced.

Answer: They are in fact coated with a special baked on heat resistant enamel, which is far better than epoxy. So to answer your question, yes, they are coated so that they will not tarnish.
