Helpful Questions to ask regarding Fireplace Items!

We are often accused of having far too many options on this website...So, in an effort to help you narrow down your choices, here are some Important things to consider in your search for fireplace related items.

Topics discussed on the page:

Gas Logs

  1. What's most important to you..."Heat" or "Looks"?

  2. Do you already have gas in the fireplace?

  3. Natural gas or Liquid Propane?

  4. Are you familiar with different types of gas logs: Ceramic, Refractory Cement, Cement?

  5. Do you have a prefab fireplace or a masonry fireplace?

  6. How do you plan to control  the gas logs...manually, wall control, remote control, thermostat?

  7. About how big is the fireplace inside?
(front width, back width, depth, height)

 Tips:

  1. Glo Fire 100% Ceramic logs glow "RED HOT" like real wood and will radiate the most heat for fully vented logs.

  2. Peterson has the largest selection of "REALISTIC LOOKING" logs as well as the most variety of reliable remote controls including the APK-15 which has the ability to adjust the flame from a remote control.

Fireplace Screens

  1. What does the fireplace look like...brick, marble, stone?

  2. What color is the brick...or marble...or stone?

  3. Is it a flat surface...or are there any projections on the top or sides that would prevent a screen from sitting flush against the opening?\

  4. Do you want your screen just for looks...or for function?

  5. Do you plan to burn wood or gas?

  6. Do you have small children?

  7. What room is the fireplace in?

  8. What style of decor do you have in the room?

  9. About how big is the fireplace opening?

 Tips:

  1. For formal rooms or marble fireplaces,  we suggest solid brass...either cast or plain depending on decor.

  2. For less formal rooms like the den or for brick or stone faces, we suggest natural iron or black iron.

  3. Screens always look best with matching andirons and tools. Check out fireplace ENSEMBLES.

Glass Doors

  1. What does the fireplace look like...brick, marble, stone?

  2. What color is the brick...or marble...or stone?

  3. Is it a flat surface...or are there any projections on the top or sides that would prevent the frame from overlapping opening?

  4. Is it a masonry or prefab fireplace?

  5. Do you plan to burn wood or gas?

  6. Do you want glass doors just for looks...or for function?

  7. How quickly do you need the glass doors (lead times vary between to stock or custom)

  8. "ABOUT HOW BIG IS THE FIREPLACE"

  9. $65.00 to measure and install (standard installations)

 Tips:

The measurements of the fireplace opening are critical for ordering glass doors. Any obstructions that prevent the doors from overlapping the opening must be noticed.

  1. For marble fireplaces that are real masonry, consider the Brookfield or Madison from Design Specialties. These ship the quickest (2-3 weeks).

  2. For a more custom "sleek" look on marble fireplaces, use the silhouette cutback, particularly if you need a finish that is not available in one of the stock doors.

  3. The mesh panel back-up doors are best when burning wood.

  4. The least expensive model is Gallery from Portland Willamette is the least expensive (around $450.00).

  5. For the ultimate selection of custom styles and finishes, look at FDM. These doors are made of a flat steel solid bar-stock cut with a plasma cutting type of device, so there are no visible seems or welds.

Fireplaces - Determining the type to be installed

Before discussing installing a new fireplace it is important to determine the type of fireplace that is best for the application:

  1. Is it for a room addition, new construction, or in an existing room?

  2. What room are you planning to put it in?

  3. How do you plan to have it installed...inside the room, in a corner, outside the house?

  4. Is it a single story  or two story home

  5. Upstairs or downstairs?

  6. Do you plan to burn wood or gas?

Tips:

  1. For new construction - Wood burning or gas burning fireplaces are just as easy to install if framing is being done on the job already

  2. For existing homes - If there is an outside wall that the fireplace can go agains, Direct vent gas fireplaces are substantially easier to install and can save a fortune in labor simply because they require no chimney.

  3. Ventless fireplaces - These are recommended only as a last resort where other types of fireplaces are virtually impossible to install.

Wood Fireplaces - Look at General Fireplace Questions first

  1. Is it for a room addition, new construction, or in an existing room?

  3. How do you plan to have it installed...inside the room, in a corner, outside the house?

  4. Is it a single story  or two story home?

  5. Upstairs or downstairs?

  6. Do you plan to burn wood or gas?

  7. Do you want it for heat or just for looks?

  8. Do you have any idea how you want the fireplace to look when it's finished?

  9. Heat - Warm Magic (+extremely efficient firebox, -smaller inside, -visible grillwork)

  10. Looks - Superhearth (+less metal showing, +large interior and opening, +like masonry)

  11. Low Cost - Builders Series (+fits tighter spaces, +small inside, -less functional space)

  12. Do you have any idea how you want it to look when it's finished?

Tips:

  1. For the most heat - Warm Magic (+extremely efficient firebox, -smaller inside, -visible grillwork)

  2. For the best looks - Superhearth series has less metal showing, large interior and opening, and looks the most like masonry.

  3. For the lowest cost - Builders series fireplaces are the least expensive, but they have shorter openings and much less depth...

  4. For tight spaces - use builders series fireplaces.

Gas Fireplaces

  1. Is it for a room addition, new construction, or in an existing room?

  2. What room are you planning to put it in?

  3. How do you plan to have it installed...inside the room, in a corner, outside the house?

  4. Is it a single story  or two story home?

  5. Upstairs or downstairs?

  6. Do you plan to burn natural gas or liquid propane?

  7. What's most important - heat or looks?

  8. Do you have any idea how you want the fireplace to look when it's finished?

  9. Are you familiar with the difference between natural vent, direct vent, and vent free?

  10. Is there an outside wall that you can install the fireplace against?

  11. Focus on the DV360 and DV580 with the Comfort Control System

  12. Sell a complete package with a mantel...it makes it very easy to install

 Tips:

  1. For the easiest installation use a cabinet mantel either against an outside wall or a corner outside wall. Simply vent the fireplace through the wall without a chimney, pipe the gas to the fireplace, and place the cabinet mantel around the firebox. That's it!

  2. For the best overall look and performance select either the DV360 or DV580. These have the best burners and have the Comfort Control System as an option.

  3. For less expensive options use the BDV series

  4. For tight spaces or shallow depth, use the BDV series

 Mantel Surrounds

  1. Is this for an existing fireplace or new construction?

  2. Are you doing any other remodeling?

  3. What else are you doing in your remodeling project?

  4. What does the fireplace look like right now?

  5. Are you changing the face of the fireplace?

  6. Does the face of the fireplace project out from the wall more than an inch, or is it almost flat with the wall?

  7. We will need to know the dimensions of the fireplace facing and opening to determine if we can use a stock sized mantel or if it has to be custom made.

  Tips:

We will need to know the dimensions of the fireplace facing and opening to determine if we can use a stock sized mantel or if it has to be custom made.

  1. Stock size mantels work best If the fireplace is relatively flat. Pearl mantels are very inexpensive compared to similar custom mantels.

  2. Minimum clearance for masonry fireplaces is 8" on each side and 12" on top from the opening of the fireplace.

  3. Minimum clearance for prefab fireplaces is determined by the graph in the installation manual of each fireplace but is usually 6" on each side and 6" to 12" on the top if the mantel is less then 1" thick. The thicker the legs or deeper the shelf, the further the wood must be from the opening.
