Electric Ceiling Fans –
Terry’s Favorite DC Motor Choices
April 7th, 2017
When we talk about electric ceiling fans, there are so many options. If you are looking for electrical efficiency, Direct Current (DC) Electric Motors are the way to go. Ceiling fan manufacturers are now installing energy efficient Light Emitting Diode (LED) Lights. You have to be careful though – LEDs do not all put out the same amount of light as older light bulbs. If you’re not sure where to start, give me a call and I’ll help you narrow down your choices.
To start, here are my favorite DC Motor Electric Ceiling Fans:
1) Emerson Carrera Grande Eco DC Electric Ceiling Fan
Everyone loves the Emerson Carrera Grande. It’s a great classic yet modern looking ceiling fan – in the trade, we call this style transitional. The Carrera Grande Eco is extremely efficient. It uses just 29 Watts to produce a wind speed over three and a half miles per hour. Emerson is the original maker of the DC Motor. DC Electric Motors are much more efficient than Alternating Current electric motors. The quality of this fan is top notch. If you like the look, choose your size and finish. The Carrera Grande Eco is available in 54 inches, 60 inches, and giant 72 inches.
2) Minka Aire Simple DC Motor Electric Ceiling Fan with LED Lights
A fan that has gained in popularity is the minimalist Minka Aire Simple. I like it even better with the LED Light Kit. Minka is a respected manufacturer of ceiling fans and lights. This Simple is a great DC Motor fan with clean lines and great efficiency. It tops all the scores of our quality metrics. Minka’s Simple only comes in the 52 inch size, and comes in three finishes: oil rubbed bronze, silver and white. The Simple looks great in large numbers where you don’t want to take away from the surrounding aesthetic.
3) Craftmade Sonnet DC Electric Motor Ceiling Fan with LED Lights
Craftmade makes the fabulous DC Sonnet. It uses only 34 Watts and can run up to almost 4 miles per hour of wind. Again, a very simple three-blade design. Craftmade makes a great fan. It comes in a few different finishes. You can get yours with a chrome or espresso colored body. It also comes with a few different fan blade designs and colors to choose from. It’s available in 52, 60 and 70 inch blade spans.
4) Casablanca Panama DC Motor Electric Ceiling Fan
Casablanca has been making the Panama for many years. What they do is take something that’s great and continually made it better. It generates over three and half miles per hour of wind from only 32 Watts through the DC Motor. The Panama is a great transitional design that is ultra efficient. The Panama comes in the versatile size of 54 inches, and a ton of finishes. There’s Snow White, Brushed Nickel, Matte Black, Weathered Copper, Antique Pewter, Maiden Bronze, Aged Bronze, Brushed Cocoa, and Cottage White. This is a great fan in any setting.
5) Fanimation Odyn DC Electric Motor Outdoor Wet Rated Ceiling Fan with LED Lights
The Odyn is such a great looking modern fan. It’s among the most popular, if not the most popular large size fan. Because it’s so large it moves a ton of air. Yet, to be efficient, it is only able to make just under 3 miles per hour of wind. This is coming from eight blades spanning a massive 84 inches. Yes, that’s 7 feet. The Odyn, as many large ceiling fans, is able to move a lot of air – but not very fast. This is due to laws written for safety. It comes in a few nice finishes – Brushed Nickel, Dark Bronze, Matte Greige, and Matte White. This is a big fan that can make a style statement all its own, or if you want you make it blend with its environment. It is available with bright LEDs and is outdoor wet rated.
6) Montecarlo Turbine DC Electric Ceiling Fan with Lights
The Montecarlo Turbine is an appealing fan that pegs all our graph metrics. It’s a good looking modern fan that is extremely efficient. It will move a lot of air quickly if you want it to – producing a max airspeed over well over four miles per hour. The Turbine comes in black and white and has a rubberized finish that means that all eight blades are easy to clean. It comes in one size – 56 inches. Montecarlo hasn’t moved the Turbine to LED lights yet. This means for now the bright halogen bulbs, while taking more energy, produce a lot of bright light.
Thanks for coming by. I hope this helps!
