Belt Drive Fans

Belt Driven Ceiling Fans

Belt Drive Fan Tip: Belt driven ceiling fans were some of the very first ceiling fans ever created and have been around since the turn of the century. These unique ceiling fans operate from a single motor that has a pully which drives a belt that is stretched between each individual fan. The belt drive motor is attached to the wall or ceiling. Originally, the belt was driven by water wheels located outside the building with elaborate belt and pully systems. Nowadays, we use electricity. Some of the belt driven fans have a single fan while others can have multiple fans. The length between each fan can be up to 20 feet or so and there can be up to 5 fans driven by a single belt and motor. Belt driven ceiling fans are normally seen in commercial applications, although some people will install them in their home if the layout of the home lends itself to this application...and the budget is relatively unlimited. The majority of belt drive ceiling fans that you see in restaurants and hotels and magazines are manufactured by Fanimation, the premier manufacturer of belt driven ceiling fans. Although belt driven fans move a slight amount of air, they are designed more for show than for function.

Ceiling Fan Size Chart

ROOM CFM FAN SIZE
6' x 6' 3,000 - 4,500 24" to 36"
10' x 10' 4,000 - 5,500 37" to 48"
12' x 12' 6,200 - 7,500 49" to 56"
15' x 15' 7,000 - 9,000 60" to 72"
Larger 9,000 - 11,000 Over 72"
What Size Fan Do I Need? BIGGER IS BETTER: The main cooling effect is felt from directly beneath a ceiling fan and drops off dramatically within about 1 foot from the blades. If the fan is in the middle of the room with seating off to the side, use as large a fan as you can handle that has the highest wind speed (refer to our MPH ratings). If the seating is directly beneath the fan, use a fan large enough to cover the seating area.
