Here is a rock fireplace with a traditional mantel surround. Doors for this fireplace need to be made to fit inside the opening leaving about 1/4" to 1/2" gap between the narrowest width and about 1/4" to 1/2" higher than the top of the lintel. Finishes that will look best on this type of application will be black or forged iron. The mortar joints will be a small challenge to blend the color to match the existing mortar, but it can be done with a little trial and error. Also, mortar should be added at the bottom across the opening as shown in the examples.
These options are behind the glass so you can burn the fire with the doors open and still have spark protection. Great for real wood or gas logs since most gas long manufacturers insist that you have a screen in front of the logs when they are burning. Mesh panel doors are the most popular and are best for when there are toddlers present because they will not open backwards whereas the mesh screens are easily pushed in.
