Project 10045 - Fireplace Door Mock-Ups

Arched Rock Fireplace

Request: I am trying to find glass doors to fit our fireplace. As you can see in the attached picture the fire place is made out of rounded lake stones and has a irregular arch. Behind the rocks is a metal insert with an opening size of 38 inches wide and 30.5 inches tall, the insert walls angle inwards as they go back. The arch walls are about 18 inches the left side and 20 inches on the right. The top of the arch is about 30 inches from the bottom, and the minimum width between stones is 37.5 inches. I am having a difficult time finding anything that might fit. With the rounded stones I don't think an overlap fit door would work at all, and with the angled side walls of the insert I also don't see how an inside fit door would mount without modifications to the insert (such as welding on a custom surround). Please let me know if you have an idea on how to make this work.

Our Comments: In this case, we would require a template of the fireplace opening drawn as close to the irregular shape of the stones as possible. You can watch a video on how to make such a template here: Video #6: How To Measure and Arched Fireplace Opening. We can make a door with a symmetrical frame to fit inside the stone (options 1 & 2) or cut the frame to fit the irregularities of the stone. In either case, the gaps will then need to be filled with mortar. The cut-to-stone option leaves much smaller gaps that are easier to fill, but whether or not you will like that look is much more subjective. We've done this in the past for someone who just loved this look, but shown it to others who are quite mortified by the idea. We'd love to get your take on it.

Note: These mock-ups are not to scale and are meant to help you choose the model of your screen or door, not the finish. Although we may create a general representation of black, iron, bronze, gold and silver tones, you must choose your finish from our samples using the links below. Ask your project manager which samples apply to the items in your project.

Mesh & Insulation Options

The Mesh options are behind the glass so you can burn the fire with the doors open and still have spark protection. Great for real wood or gas logs since most gas long manufacturers insist that you have a screen in front of the logs when they are burning. Mesh panel doors are the most popular and are best for when there are toddlers present because they will not open backwards whereas the mesh screens are easily pushed in. Insulation goes between the back of the frame and the fireplace facing, providing a better seal.

Black Mesh Curtains - These slide back and forth on a rod behind the glass
Gate Mesh Doors - These are separate doors behind the glass that have a flat wire mesh and a black frame.
Insulation: Provides a better seal between the fireplace face and the door frame.
