Project 10339 - Glass Doors for Brick Fireplace
Customer Comments: The height is exactly 29 inches and width is 42 inches. We want to add a screen to protect the rug in front of the fireplace. It will have to sit inside the opening. I like #21 Carolina because of the doors but also like the idea of a simple screen with handles to move it. I’m not sure what will work best. Thank you
Our Comments: We actually would suggest glass doors with wire mesh doors behind the glass. This allows you to close the doors when the fire is dying out and keeps the hot air in the room and prevents the cold air from coming into the home overnight, since you would normally have to leave your damper open all night. Otherwise, a mesh door attached to the opening would be appropriate as in the examples below. Free standing screens that sit inside will take up room inside the fireplace and have nothing to fall backwards against, where they normally are held steady by sitting against the fireplace. A free standing screen with doors would be too unstable. So do not recommend a free standing screen when the opening is above the floor like yours. With that said, we have provided examples of glass doors, screen doors and a free standing screen.
Fireplace Opening: 42" W x 29" H

Mesh & Insulation Options
The Mesh options are behind the glass so you can burn the fire with the doors open and still have spark protection. Great for real wood or gas logs since most gas long manufacturers insist that you have a screen in front of the logs when they are burning. Mesh panel doors are the most popular and are best for when there are toddlers present because they will not open backwards whereas the mesh screens are easily pushed in. Insulation goes between the back of the frame and the fireplace facing, providing a better seal.
