Project #10402 - White Brick Fireplace
Customer Comments: Hello, I am looking to have fireplace doors made for my living room. Previous owners converted a wood burning fireplace into a gas log fireplace. I see a "Superior Heatform" stamp inside the fireplace. I believe it was installed in the early late 1970s or early 1980s. When the fireplace was converted to gas they put some sort of stopper on the damper so that I cannot close it all the way (safety failsafe) but this makes my room very drafty. I may install a gas fireplace in the lower level and eventually use this fireplace in our living room as a wood burning fireplace in the future.
Size of fireplace: Brick fascia opening is 25 11/16" tall by 38 1/8" wide. From the firebox floor to the metal insert on the underside of the upper cutout is 25" tall. The firebox floor is elevated slightly from the brick hearth. There is also some sort of metal clamp on the upper portion of the cutout - looks to be removable and non-functional.
I am looking for minimalist fireplace doors preferably with a fairly thin frame. We are thinking black. Do I have to use mesh/screen if I burn logs in the future?
Our Comments: We have provided several examples of doors that will look great on your fireplace. These frames are 1 1/2" to 2" wide. There are others that are narrower, but because the mortar joints around your fireplace are wide, you need a certain amount of overlap to cover them, so the very narrow frames are not appropriate. Also, since the hearth is raised inside, the frame at the bottom must be wider in order to cover that and include an air draft, so it is better to have the frame proportionally a bit wider as well. All gas log manufacturers recommend you have a screen when you burn gas logs and you must burn them with the doors open, so we suggest adding a mesh curtain or mesh doors behind the glass.

Mesh & Insulation Options
The Mesh options are behind the glass so you can burn the fire with the doors open and still have spark protection. Great for real wood or gas logs since most gas long manufacturers insist that you have a screen in front of the logs when they are burning. Mesh panel doors are the most popular and are best for when there are toddlers present because they will not open backwards whereas the mesh screens are easily pushed in. Insulation goes between the back of the frame and the fireplace facing, providing a better seal.
Black Mesh Curtains - These slide back and forth on a rod behind the glass
Gate Mesh Doors - These are separate doors behind the glass that have a flat wire mesh and a black frame.
Insulation: Provides a better seal between the fireplace face and the door frame.
