Project #10453 - Glass Doors for Fireplace
Customer Comments: We want forged iron, black, no glass - mesh only. Inside dimensions are 27.75" tall x 63" wide. Dimensions would provide ~1/4" of margin. Placement would be on the edge of the firebrick vs. natural stone.
Our Comments: Before I work on this, I need to know if you are suggesting you want to install the frame behind the stones. " Placement would be on the edge of the firebrick vs. natural stone."
In most cases, this is not possible because it may be impossible to fit a frame that is wider than the stones into the opening. Because the fireplace tapers back slightly, it may prevent you from being able to put the door frame in at an angle and then slide it forward. The only way to know if this can work would be to create a template to the exact size you want to make the frame and then attempt to put it in. A piece of 1/4" plywood would suffice. You can try cardboard, but you must make sure it does not bend at all when performing the test.
In most cases, we find it does not work. In almost all cases, we make the door about 1/4" narrower than the narrowest distance between the stones. Once the frame is installed, the gaps between the stones are then filled with mortar. There are instructions for such applications here on our website here: Glass Doors for Rock Fireplaces.
One other note: if you want mesh doors instead of glass, each of the doors must be fully framed, so the view will be obstructed much more than it would be with a glass door. If we made a glass door like this, we would use a mesh curtain behind the glass so you could burn it with the doors open. Below are examples of both options. Let me know if the first is what you are looking for or if you would consider the second. It does not affect the cost aside from $100.00 for the addition of mesh curtains behind the glass doors.
Fireplace Opening: 63" W x 27 3/4" H
Note: These mock-ups are not to scale and are meant to help you choose the model of your screen or door, not the finish. Although we may create a general representation of black, iron, bronze, gold and silver tones, you must choose your finish from our samples using the links below. Ask your project manager which samples apply to the items in your project.

Mesh & Insulation Options
The Mesh options are behind the glass so you can burn the fire with the doors open and still have spark protection. Great for real wood or gas logs since most gas long manufacturers insist that you have a screen in front of the logs when they are burning. Mesh panel doors are the most popular and are best for when there are toddlers present because they will not open backwards whereas the mesh screens are easily pushed in. Insulation goes between the back of the frame and the fireplace facing, providing a better seal.
This page was created as part of our Free Fireplace Door Design service. Anyone who has a fireplace and is considering glass doors can take advantage of this program. All you have to do is email us some pictures of your fireplace and we will create digital mock-ups showing you how various fireplace doors will look on your fireplace.
