Project #10518 - Glass Doors for See Through Outdoor Fireplace
Customer Comments: I have a two-sided outdoor fireplace, one side under an open pavilion, the other facing a patio area. Unfortunately, that side of the house generates a "wind tunnel" which blows through the fireplace. I need ceramic glass doors with a low-profile frame to retain the see-through effect of the fireplace. I like the Stone Manufacturing ST-Minimal-1 doors but I can't tell if the ceramic glass is an option, or if it can be used outdoors.
Our Comments: Couple things: Ceramic glass is not necessary in order to burn a fire with the doors closed. All of the doors by Design Specialties have a lifetime warranty on the 1/4" tempered glass and can be burned closed. There is no warranty on the ceramic glass. Also, none of the doors made by Stone Manufacturing should be burned with the doors closed and they do not warrant them for that purpose. So we have created mockups using doors from Design Specialties that are appropriate for outdoor applications.

Aluminum Doors
Aluminum doors can be used outdoors in powder coat finishes with the optional stainless steel hinges. We recommend darker finishes, and in this case have use a burnt brown "Ancient Age" finish, which seems to work well with the stacked stone and dark wood in the pavilion. Aluminum doors are recommended as cabinet doors since they do not make the bifold hinge in stainless steel, just the left and right side hinges.
Option #1: Brookfield Fireplace Glass Door in Ancient Age. This door would overlap the opening 1" on the top and sides.
Option #2: Stiletto Fireplace Glass Door in Ancient Age. This door is shown as an inside fit. We would make the door 1/4" less on each side and on the top. You would need to fill the gaps between the frame and the stones with mortar.
Stainless Steel Doors
This is the legend door from Design Specialties made from solid 3/16" thick 304 stainless steel. This is the most durable material for outdoor fireplace doors and will compliment your stainless steel grill. The doors can be made as twin or bifold. Bifold doors are the most convenient and make it easier to open when you need to add wood. It will also allow you to keep your wood stacked on the sides as you have now without being in the way for opening the doors. The door frame would overlap the opening 1" on the top and each side. It could also be made to fit inside the opening, but doing so is not advised since it shrinks the opening and also requires mortar work. This is the door we recommend for all outdoor applications for those who can afford it.
Option #3: Legend Bifold Outdoor Fireplace Glass Door in Solid Stainless Steel. Made with 1" narrow frame fitting inside with mortar.
Option #4: Legend Bifold Outdoor Fireplace Glass Door in Solid Stainless Steel. Standard 1 1/2" wide outer frame. This is the door we recommend most for this project.
Option #5: Legend Bifold Square to Arch Outdoor Fireplace Door with Window Pane Option in Solid Stainless Steel. 2" wide outer frame.

Mesh & Insulation Options
The Mesh options are behind the glass so you can burn the fire with the doors open and still have spark protection. Great for real wood or gas logs since most gas long manufacturers insist that you have a screen in front of the logs when they are burning. Mesh panel doors are the most popular and are best for when there are toddlers present because they will not open backwards whereas the mesh screens are easily pushed in. Insulation goes between the back of the frame and the fireplace facing, providing a better seal.
Black Mesh Curtains - These slide back and forth on a rod behind the glass
Gate Mesh Doors - These are separate doors behind the glass that have a flat wire mesh and a black frame.
Insulation: Provides a better seal between the fireplace face and the door frame.
