Project #10591 - Glass Doors for Fireplace
Customer Comments: The dimensions of the opening are about 29" x 36". I'm happy to take more precise measurements if needed at this stage. I'm looking for something that's transitional (not too modern, not too rustic). I'd like an inside fit instead of an overlap fit. I'm good with tempered glass (instead of ceramic) if you think it'll work with us burning with the doors closed. I believe we'd need a damper at the bottom too, but open to suggestions here as well. Thanks so much.
Our Comments: We do not recommend an inside fit on a brick fireplace like yours. The opening is not perfectly square and there are irregular edges of the brick, so the door would need to be made about 1/4" smaller than the narrowest dimension. Plus, it would need to fit under the lintel, leaving a wider gap at the top. You can fill those gaps with mortar, but it is a lot of extra work that we believe is not necessary to achieve a good clean finished look. We have provided a couple examples of doors that can fit inside as well as doors that overlap. The overlap fitting doors are made from solid steel that is just 3/16" thick, so they do not project out into the room like doors you see at home centers, they are very flat to the fireplace. The Bungalow is an exception as it has a rounded frame similar to your Georgian style mantel.

Mesh & Insulation Options
The Mesh options are behind the glass so you can burn the fire with the doors open and still have spark protection. Great for real wood or gas logs since most gas long manufacturers insist that you have a screen in front of the logs when they are burning. Mesh panel doors are the most popular and are best for when there are toddlers present because they will not open backwards whereas the mesh screens are easily pushed in. Insulation goes between the back of the frame and the fireplace facing, providing a better seal.
Black Mesh Curtains - These slide back and forth on a rod behind the glass
Gate Mesh Doors - These are separate doors behind the glass that have a flat wire mesh and a black frame.
Insulation: Provides a better seal between the fireplace face and the door frame.
