Project #10722 - Glass Doors for Fireplace
H.W. Covert Company Fireplace Damper
This damper poses a curious problem for fireplace doors because it projects 1" beyond the opening when the damper is closed. See 2 interesting solutions below. You can download the original owner's manual from 1923 here: H.W. Cover Company Owner's Manual
Customer Comments:
Note 1: that damper handle juts out of the fireplace opening by 1" when it is closed. Does this mean the damper has to be open to allow the fireplace door to sit flush against the fireplace?
Note 2: that mantle juts out right above the opening. There is about 2 1/4" to 2 3/4" from the top of the fireplace opening to the bottom of the mantle ledge.
It's important that we have the option of having the doors closed while the fire is on. Ideally the doors would radiate heat. We want to keep the smoke out as much as possible.
Height of opening in 26". In some places the brick is uneven and the opening is 26.5".
Width of opening is 33 5/16" on the bottom and 32 10/16" on the top.
Our Comments: The damper does present a significant challenge if you want to be able to close when the doors are closed. The first 2 options below allow you to do this. The other options require the damper to be open when the doors are closed.
Fireplace Opening: 32 5/8-33 5/16" W x 26-26 1/2" H
Note: These mock-ups are not to scale and are meant to help you choose the model of your screen or door, not the finish. Although we may create a general representation of black, iron, bronze, gold and silver tones, you must choose your finish from our samples using the links below. Mesh & Insulation Options
The Mesh options are behind the glass so you can burn the fire with the doors open and still have spark protection. Great for real wood or gas logs since most gas long manufacturers insist that you have a screen in front of the logs when they are burning. Mesh panel doors are the most popular and are best for when there are toddlers present because they will not open backwards whereas the mesh screens are easily pushed in. Insulation goes between the back of the frame and the fireplace facing, providing a better seal.
