Project #10729 - Glass Doors for Fireplace
Customer Comments: I’d like an estimate on a Glass Door and one for gas log set. Attached are photos of the fireplace as per your website instructions.
Dimensions:
Opening Height: 27 5/8"
Opening Width: 27 5/8"
Rear Width: 23 3/4"
Depth: 18 1/2"
Center Width at 7" from back: 25 1/2"
Fireplace: We are interested in your model CHDG31-18-2VT Firelogs set. Is this an appropriate choice for our fireplace dimensions? If not, what would you recommend?
Door: We want to retain the existing trim which you see in the photos, so an inside fit is desirable. See the diagram in the Word doc for explanation on how it could work. Our first choice is DS-CUSTOM-CAROLINA - please see the attached Word doc for options. If there is a simpler, cheaper model with just clear glass, please show us that one, also, and give us a price.
Our Comments: The gas logs you have chosen are a good choice. The glass door may not be ideal. With such a small opening and having to fit the doors inside, you may want something with a narrower frame. Here are some examples shown with and without the gas logs. Keep in mind that you CANNOT burn the gas logs with the doors closed. We have them shown that way because we cannot create these mockups with the doors open, it is a limitation based on images that are available.
Fireplace Opening: 27 5/8" W x 27 5/8" H
Note: These mock-ups are not to scale and are meant to help you choose the model of your screen or door, not the finish. Although we may create a general representation of black, iron, bronze, gold and silver tones, you must choose your finish from our samples using the links below. Ask your project manager which samples apply to the items in your project.
Finish Samples: Design Specialties Finishes | Stone Manufacturing Finishes | Hearth Creations Finishes
Low End Aluminum Doors
Aluminum is an excellent material for fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle high temperatures when treated with powder coated finishes. It is also the most affordable.

Medium Range Steel Doors
Steel doors are more substantial than the less expensive aluminum doors. They are heavy duty and rugged and are more customizable because the frames are laser cut.
High End Hand Crafted Solid Brass
These doors are hand crafted by skilled artisans from Solid Brass or Steel, depending on the finish that is desired. Very high end, and very refined. Items made from solid brass come in a wide variety of hand crafted patinas and other finishes. Satin Nickel finishes done on solid brass are the finest quality and will not rust like plated steel.

Install Plan
Your idea of using a metal bar behind your decorative trim is decent, but we would simply make an angle iron that could be mounted to the inner bricks on the sides and go out beyond the trim as shown below. This would provide a backer for the door to rest against. The door could be mounted to the angle iron or to the fireplace as usual depending on the door you choose and how the factory determines is the best application.

Mesh & Insulation Options
The Mesh options are behind the glass so you can burn the fire with the doors open and still have spark protection. Great for real wood or gas logs since most gas long manufacturers insist that you have a screen in front of the logs when they are burning. Mesh panel doors are the most popular and are best for when there are toddlers present because they will not open backwards whereas the mesh screens are easily pushed in. Insulation goes between the back of the frame and the fireplace facing, providing a better seal.
