Project #10868 - Screens for Large Arched Fireplace in Early American Home

Customer Comments: Hello, I've recently purchased an old Early American home and it has a very large fireplace that measures 60" across and 52" high opening. I would really appreciate an estimate on a tasteful but simple screen. Best regards,

Our Comments: We have lots of choices when it comes to Early American period design screens and accessories. You can have a screen made to cover the entire opening or something a bit smaller that can fit insSome are made from wrought iron and others from solid brass. There are many finishes to choose from, but looking at your home we suggest oil rubbed steel, oil rubbed bronze or other darker tone brass finishes. Hope this helps!

Fireplace Opening: 60" W x 52" H

Note: These mock-ups are not to scale and are meant to help you choose the model of your screen or door, not the finish. Although we may create a general representation of black, iron, bronze, gold and silver tones, you must choose your finish from our samples using the links below. Ask your project manager which samples apply to the items in your project.

How To Make A Template

Refer to the picture below: Get a sheet of heavy plastic, the kind that is used as a drop cloth for painting. Cut it roughly 2 inches wider than the opening. You may need to hold it up to the opening to make a rough mark where to cut. Tape it onto the bricks inside the mantel so that it is stretched as flat as possible. Make sure the bottom edge is the straight edge and is exactly flush with the hearth. Once it is taped in place, take a thin marker and trace a line of the opening at each brick. If you make a correction, draw an arrow to the correct part of the line so it is obvious which to follow. Mark the front of the plastic as "Outside Looking In". Take a good picture of the template while it is in place so we can verify it was done correctly.

Take the following measurements while the template is still in place. Write the measurements anywhere on the template. It may be easier to write the measurements on the template after you have taken your picture and taken the template down. Be sure to either cut the tape off the template or fold it over so that it does not get stuck when you roll the template up.

Write your First and Last Name, Phone Number and Sales Order Number (if you have it) on the template. Roll the template up and put it into a shipping tube...or get a shipping tube when you go to mail it

Email us the picture you took of the template and we will take a look at it. If it looks good, we will tell you where to send it.

Mesh & Insulation Options

The Mesh options are behind the glass so you can burn the fire with the doors open and still have spark protection. Great for real wood or gas logs since most gas long manufacturers insist that you have a screen in front of the logs when they are burning. Mesh panel doors are the most popular and are best for when there are toddlers present because they will not open backwards whereas the mesh screens are easily pushed in. Insulation goes between the back of the frame and the fireplace facing, providing a better seal.

Black Mesh Curtains - These slide back and forth on a rod behind the glass
Gate Mesh Doors - These are separate doors behind the glass that have a flat wire mesh and a black frame.
Insulation: Provides a better seal between the fireplace face and the door frame.
