Project #10978 - Minimal Glass Doors for Tile Fireplace

Customer Comments: Hello, I'd like your help in mocking up a few options for our fireplace door. Interested in minimal frame / modern look. Clear glass doors. Possibly with screen behind the doors. Color for finishes would likely be black. Please let me know if you need any more information to make some suggestions.

Our Comments: Here are some great examples of minimal style glass doors for your fireplace. From your closeup picture, it appears that the actual opening drops down below the tile opening. How far back that drop is from the front of the tile will have an impact on which of these doors will work and how they must be made. Whether or not you can use mesh curtains behind the glass will depend on this. Gate mesh doors will not be impacted. We will follow up with you to discuss this further.

Fireplace Opening: 40 1/4" W x 29" H

Note: These mock-ups are not to scale and are meant to help you choose the model of your screen or door, not the finish. Although we may create a general representation of black, iron, bronze, gold and silver tones, you must choose your finish from our samples using the links below. Ask your project manager which samples apply to the items in your project.

Before:

Low End Aluminum Doors

Aluminum is an excellent material for fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle high temperatures when treated with powder coated finishes. It is also the most affordable.

Medium Range Steel Doors

Steel doors are more substantial than the less expensive aluminum doors. They are heavy duty and rugged and are more customizable because the frames are laser cut.

High End Hand Crafted Solid Brass

These doors are hand crafted by skilled artisans from Solid Brass or Steel, depending on the finish that is desired. Very high end, and very refined. Items made from solid brass come in a wide variety of hand crafted patinas and other finishes. Satin Nickel finishes done on solid brass are the finest quality and will not rust like plated steel.

Minimal-1
Minimal-1 Fireplace Door Option #4: Minimal-1 Fireplace Glass Door in Flat Black with Mesh Curtains. This is the most minimal looking door and is made to fit inside the opening. There is no frame on the sides, just an angle iron at the top and bottom. The width of the angle iron at the top will may be impacted by the dropped opening. We are showing it wider than normal in order to allow for the drop and add a mesh curtain. It may not need this extra width depending on how far back that drop is and how far it drops down.
Casting
DF1G Solid Brass Fireplace Door with Half Round Doors Option #5: DF1G-HALF-ROUND Bifold Door with Black Outer Frame and Solid Brass Half Round Door Frames. Shown with Matching CT6H Fireplace Tools. This can also be all black or black with satin nickel. We chose this door to tie in with the piano that has brass hinges since black with brass is making a comeback in home design trends.

Additional Measurements Needed

We are assuming the 40 1/4" W x 29" H opening width is the measurement taken from the inside edge of schluter surrounding the opening. If it was not taken from there, we will need that measurement. The additional measurements have to do with the lip at the top and the raised hearth inside the fireplace. Please refer to the two pictures below:

A: How far back is the lip from the tile/schluter opening?
B: How far down does the lip drop from the tile/schluter opening?
C: How much taller is the inner hearth than the outer hearth?
D: How far back is the raised inner hearth from the front of the tile/schluter opening?

Measure #1: Lip that drops down behind the top of the opening.
Measure #2: Lip that drops down behind the top of the opening.

Mesh & Insulation Options

The Mesh options are behind the glass so you can burn the fire with the doors open and still have spark protection. Great for real wood or gas logs since most gas long manufacturers insist that you have a screen in front of the logs when they are burning. Mesh panel doors are the most popular and are best for when there are toddlers present because they will not open backwards whereas the mesh screens are easily pushed in. Insulation goes between the back of the frame and the fireplace facing, providing a better seal.

Black Mesh Curtains - These slide back and forth on a rod behind the glass
Gate Mesh Doors - These are separate doors behind the glass that have a flat wire mesh and a black frame.
Insulation: Provides a better seal between the fireplace face and the door frame.
