Glass Doors for Extra Tall Fireplace - Project #11164

Customer Comments: Hi, We are looking for fireplace doors for a fireplace that is currently open without any permanent doors or screen. It is a masonry fireplace that was a wood burning fireplace converted to natural gas several years ago. It was a wall of brick with a raised hearth and surround that was converted about 10 years ago to the granite "floating" surround and flat hearth that is only about .25" above the wood flooring. Challenges:

1 - The opening is taller than it is wide - 39 7/8" H X 34 7/8" W-granite to granite (36 5/8" inside Masonry brick to brick)
2 - When the conversion was done, the opening was created a little larger than it probably should have been and we could see the damper controls when sitting in the room. Due to that and the fact that the mantel was starting to discolor, we put a smoke shield at the top of the opening that you can see in the pictures. It is about 6" high and can be removed but we would want the doors to have some design element incorporated into them to compensate for that shield.

The granite has shades of black, gray, brown, tan, white, cream and flecks of gold.

Our Comments: Here are some glass doors designed with a wider frame at the top. We see no reason why the smoke guard cannot remain in place behind the glass, particlarly if you use a gray tinted glass. We have created several mockups showing that option as well.

Fireplace Opening: 34 7/8" W x 39 7/8" H

Note: These mock-ups are not to scale and are meant to help you choose the model of your screen or door, not the finish. Although we may create a general representation of black, iron, bronze, gold and silver tones, you must choose your finish from our samples using the links below. Ask your project manager which samples apply to the items in your project.

Mesh & Insulation Options

The Mesh options are behind the glass so you can burn the fire with the doors open and still have spark protection. Great for real wood or gas logs since most gas long manufacturers insist that you have a screen in front of the logs when they are burning. Mesh panel doors are the most popular and are best for when there are toddlers present because they will not open backwards whereas the mesh screens are easily pushed in. Insulation goes between the back of the frame and the fireplace facing, providing a better seal.

Black Mesh Curtains - These slide back and forth on a rod behind the glass
Gate Mesh Doors - These are separate doors behind the glass that have a flat wire mesh and a black frame.
Insulation: Provides a better seal between the fireplace face and the door frame.
