Tight Seal Glass Doors for Rock Fireplace - Project #11202

Customer Comments: I need large custom fireplace doors for the fireplace shown in the attached photos. Main reason for wanting the doors is to reduce fireplace smell during spring and summer. I have a flue cover at the top of the chimney that is closed and I blocked the damper opening at the top of the fire box. Still have odors. Should I use doors that fit over the outside of the stone or inside the firebox? I need gasket seals on the doors. I can apply mortar on the inside or outside to seal the perimeter of the door frame.

Our Comments: We have two manufacturers that provide doors with a tight seal as represented below. The Design Specialties version can be burned with the doors open or closed. The Hearth Creations model is a little less expensive but can only be burned with the doors open. For the best seal and finished look, we recommend fitting the doors inside the opening and filling the gaps with mortar as shown in our mockups. Both doors will be designed with a mortar flange around the inside edge of the door frame that makes it easy to apply mortar once the door is installed.

Fireplace Opening: 48 1/2" to 49 1/2" W x 29 1/4" H

Although we may create a general representation of black, iron, bronze, gold and silver tones, you must choose your finish from our samples using the links below. Tightly Sealed Doors

These doors have vertical stiles between the glass panes and gaskets around the doors providing a better seal than typical fireplace doors. Both options can have mesh curtains or gate mesh backup doors behind the glass.

Mesh & Insulation Options

The Mesh options are behind the glass so you can burn the fire with the doors open and still have spark protection. Great for real wood or gas logs since most gas long manufacturers insist that you have a screen in front of the logs when they are burning. Mesh panel doors are the most popular and are best for when there are toddlers present because they will not open backwards whereas the mesh screens are easily pushed in. Insulation goes between the back of the frame and the fireplace facing, providing a better seal.

Black Mesh Curtains - These slide back and forth on a rod behind the glass
Gate Mesh Doors - These are separate doors behind the glass that have a flat wire mesh and a black frame.
Insulation: Provides a better seal between the fireplace face and the door frame.
