Glass Doors for Fireplace with Overhang - Project #11206
Customer Comments: Our fireplace opening measures 48" wide by 29" high. The fireplace floor is 3" below the hearth level. I have included 3 pictures of our fireplace plus a picture of the fireplace doors and screen we are interested in.
Our Comments: It appears that the top row of bricks sticks out slightly beyond the side bricks. If this is the case, the doors should be custom made to fit under those bricks. We would normally make a door like this to the same height as the bricks on the sides just below the mortar joint. You can then fill the gap with mortar so that mortar joint continues across the top naturally as you see in the mockups below. If it is an illusion and the bricks do not overhang, we can make any of the doors below to overlap the top bricks. We are showing all of these doors in a finish similar to your example, but each are available in a wide variety of other finishes.

Affordable Aluminum Doors
Aluminum is an excellent material for fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle high temperatures when treated with powder coated finishes. It is also the most affordable.
Option #1: Design Specialties Brookfield Bifold Fireplace Glass Door in Natural Iron with Gate Mesh Backup Doors. Can be burned closed.
Formed Steel
Formed steel doors are made from 14 gauge steel that is bent to create a 3/4" deep frame. There are seems at the top and bottom where the bent steel is pieced together. These doors will create a look that is most similar to the example you provided. These cannot be burned with the doors closed.

Medium Range Steel Doors
Steel doors are more substantial than the less expensive aluminum doors. They are heavy duty and rugged and do not have seems in the frames because they are laser cut from 3/16" thick solid steel. The example you provided is actually the Carolina door pictured below, which was previously made with seems, but is now made from laser cut steel. The Design Specialties doors cannot be made as a cabinet door in a size this large, so we included a door made by Hearth Creations that can be made that way. The Hearth Creations doors cannot be burned with the doors closed, whereas the Design Specialties doors can.

Mesh & Insulation Options
The Mesh options are behind the glass so you can burn the fire with the doors open and still have spark protection. Great for real wood or gas logs since most gas long manufacturers insist that you have a screen in front of the logs when they are burning. Mesh panel doors are the most popular and are best for when there are toddlers present because they will not open backwards whereas the mesh screens are easily pushed in. Insulation goes between the back of the frame and the fireplace facing, providing a better seal.
Black Mesh Curtains - These slide back and forth on a rod behind the glass
Gate Mesh Doors - These are separate doors behind the glass that have a flat wire mesh and a black frame.
Insulation: Provides a better seal between the fireplace face and the door frame.
