Glass Doors for Raised Fireplace in Steel Wall - Project #11218

Customer Comments: Hi! My father recommended y'all after having his fireplace doors done. We are looking for either a high temperature glass front or modern simple glass doors that can be made to fit and be installed on our rather large indoor fire and ice fireplace. The backsplash surrounding the fireplace is unfinished (but waxed) steel sheets. The opening including the lip of the fireplace itself is 43.5" x 38". The interior opening (so measuring without the exposed metal frame) is 42" x 28". Here are some photos of our fireplace. Would it be possible to get a ballpark idea of what could be done? We are ideally trying to secure it/finish it in a way that is toddler safe! We are happy to have anyone come out in person to measure and look at the fireplace. Thank you!

Our Comments: We have created a variety of mockups for you in diverse materials from low end to ultra-high end. Hope this helps.

Note: These mock-ups are not to scale and are meant to help you choose the model of your screen or door, not the finish. Although we may create a general representation of black, iron, bronze, gold and silver tones, you must choose your finish from our samples using the links below. Ask your project manager which samples apply to the items in your project.

Affordable Aluminum Doors

Aluminum is an excellent material for fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle high temperatures when treated with powder coated finishes. It is also the most affordable.

Medium Range Steel Doors

Steel doors are more substantial than the less expensive aluminum doors. They are heavy duty and rugged and are more customizable because the frames are laser cut.

High End Hand Sliding Doors

These doors are hand crafted by skilled artisans from Solid Brass or Steel. There are 4 panes of glass. The outer 2 panes are fixed and the inner 2 panes slide left and right to open and close. These doors are ideal for fireplaces raised in the wall since the doors do not stick out at all when opened and there remains a simple clean look.

Measuring Instructions

Measure #1 - The following measurements need to be taken. The overall width and height of the steel face opening, the inner width and height of the black metal opening and the width of black metal showing on all 4 sides.
  • H1: Height of black metal opening inside:
  • H2: Height of steel face opening:
  • W1: Width of black metal opening inside:
  • W2: Width of steel face opening
  • LS: Left side from steel facing to black metal opening
  • RS: Right side from steel facing to black metal opening
  • BS: Top side from steel facing to black metal opening
  • TS: Bottom side from steel facing to black metal opening
  • D: Width form opening to position allowing 1" back to hit sidewall (See Measure#2):
Measure #2 - Place a tape measure where it hits the side wall of the fireplace 1" back into the opening. Mark a spot on the bottom of the black metal where the tape measure is. Then measure "D", which is the distance from the side of the black metal opening to the marked spot. This tells us how wide we need to make a frame where the subframe is 1" deep. Some doors have a deeper subframe others have less, but this will give us a way to calculate what is required.

Mesh & Insulation Options

The Mesh options are behind the glass so you can burn the fire with the doors open and still have spark protection. Great for real wood or gas logs since most gas long manufacturers insist that you have a screen in front of the logs when they are burning. Mesh panel doors are the most popular and are best for when there are toddlers present because they will not open backwards whereas the mesh screens are easily pushed in. Insulation goes between the back of the frame and the fireplace facing, providing a better seal.

Black Mesh Curtains - These slide back and forth on a rod behind the glass
Gate Mesh Doors - These are separate doors behind the glass that have a flat wire mesh and a black frame.
Insulation: Provides a better seal between the fireplace face and the door frame.
