Glass Doors for Small Craftsman Fireplace - Project #11244

Customer Comments: Here are 3 pics of our living room and fireplace. The opening measures 30" wide x 28" high as measured from hearth stone. As you can see in the close-up, there is also about a 1" thick concrete rim but it's inside the front of the firebox. We recently pulled out the old carpet and refinished the oak floors. While we were at it, we removed the bright bronze bifold fireplace doors and the ugly pavers that were laid over the hearth stone. As near as we can figure, the hearth is limestone. We'll either find a way to restore it or put new pavers over it. As for the new fireplace doors, We're thinking cabinet style glass doors (not bifold again). We would like a dark color for the front --either a black powder coat or a dark bronze. The house was built in the 1930s. Hope this helps. We're not looking for anything very expensive. Thanks!

Our Comments: We have created examples of doors that will work with your Craftsman style home and can be made in the unusually small dimensions. We are unclear about how you wish to treat the 1" thick concrete portion as it does appear to protrude slightly beyond the edge of the bricks and will be in the way of the door frames. We can make the doors fit on top of it, add a return to the back side of the steel framed doors to allow the frame to sit in front of it, or we can cover it with a steel angle iron that matches the door. You also have the option of cutting it back flush with the opening and we can overlap it flat with the frame. Hope this helps!

Aluminum is an excellent material for fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle high temperatures when treated with powder coated finishes. It is also the most affordable.

Mesh & Insulation Options

The Mesh options are behind the glass so you can burn the fire with the doors open and still have spark protection. Great for real wood or gas logs since most gas long manufacturers insist that you have a screen in front of the logs when they are burning. Mesh panel doors are the most popular and are best for when there are toddlers present because they will not open backwards whereas the mesh screens are easily pushed in. Insulation goes between the back of the frame and the fireplace facing, providing a better seal.

Black Mesh Curtains - These slide back and forth on a rod behind the glass
Gate Mesh Doors - These are separate doors behind the glass that have a flat wire mesh and a black frame.
Insulation: Provides a better seal between the fireplace face and the door frame.
