Custom Screens for Extra Large Fireplace - Project #11422
Customer Comments: Hello! Looking to order a custom screen for our giant fireplace. Don't mind the mess, it's Christmas. After seeing it pop embers on my rug I realized we really need a screen. Measurement as follows: 77” wide and 60” high to the bar in the picture. Looking for a screen or mesh not sure which makes sense. Mainly to protect from embers. Thank you so much!
Our Comments: Here are some ideas to get you started. For larger fireplaces, the screen does not necessarily need to cover the entire opening, although there is always a slight chance sparks can bounce off the side walls and escape around the screen if it does not completely cover the fireplace. Attached screen doors are the most convenient and will provide the best spark protection. Free standing screens made to fully cover the fireplace opening are available, but they are very heavy and inconvenient when tending the fire.

Mesh Curtains
Mesh curtains do not provide 100% spark protection since the gaps in the curtain mesh are wider than the wire mesh screens further down the page. There is a 1 3/4" wide bar that holds the curtain rod, very similar to the bar you already have in place, so that bar may need to be replaced. We will need to see some pictures looking up at the top of the opening from inside the fireplace so we can determine if a bar and mesh can be installed.

Single Panel Screens
Single Panel and Bowed screens are a great alternative for large fireplaces. In this case, the screen can be made a little smaller than the opening to provide spark protection. They can also be made the full size of the fireplace but will require vertical and horizontal support bars if made that large. Larger sizes become very heavy and inconvenient to lift when tending the fire.

Folding Screens
Folding screens are an excellent option and a little easier to manipulate than a single panel screen since they can be folded. However, they are much heavier due to the additional material used to frame each panel. Folding screens can also be made with operable doors, which are quite convenient.

Attached Screen Doors
Screen doors are the most convenient because you do not have to move them out of the way to tend the fire, you simply open and close them.

Mesh & Insulation Options
The Mesh options are behind the glass so you can burn the fire with the doors open and still have spark protection. Great for real wood or gas logs since most gas long manufacturers insist that you have a screen in front of the logs when they are burning. Mesh panel doors are the most popular and are best for when there are toddlers present because they will not open backwards whereas the mesh screens are easily pushed in. Insulation goes between the back of the frame and the fireplace facing, providing a better seal.
Black Mesh Curtains - These slide back and forth on a rod behind the glass
Gate Mesh Doors - These are separate doors behind the glass that have a flat wire mesh and a black frame.
Insulation: Provides a better seal between the fireplace face and the door frame.
