Glass Doors for Zero Clearance Fireplace with Black Marble Surround - Project #11453

Customer Comments: As you can see, glass doors and mesh curtains had been installed in the fireplace before we purchased this small town house. We wish to replace them because the curtains are in bad shape and the glass doors do not fit tightly. Also, we would prefer an adjustable air intake at the bottom, as we have on the fireplaces in our main home. In our experience, this reduces loss of house heat when the doors are shut but the flue must be open because of smoldering activity in the hearth. With the glass doors tightly shut, the bottom air intake opened wide also tends to reduce downdraft blowing of smoke into the home when starting a fire with a downdraft present at the beginning. We would prefer mesh inside doors to mesh curtains.

Our Comments: As we discussed in our email exchange, tightly sealed glass doors cannot be installed on prefab metal fireplaces. However, we can reduce the overall amount of draft using custom made doors that do have less gaps in the frame and between the glass. Here are the two examples I presented in my email.

Affordable Aluminum Doors

Aluminum is an excellent material for fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle high temperatures when treated with powder coated finishes. It is also the most affordable.

Mesh & Insulation Options

The Mesh options are behind the glass so you can burn the fire with the doors open and still have spark protection. Great for real wood or gas logs since most gas long manufacturers insist that you have a screen in front of the logs when they are burning. Mesh panel doors are the most popular and are best for when there are toddlers present because they will not open backwards whereas the mesh screens are easily pushed in. Insulation goes between the back of the frame and the fireplace facing, providing a better seal.

Black Mesh Curtains - These slide back and forth on a rod behind the glass
Gate Mesh Doors - These are separate doors behind the glass that have a flat wire mesh and a black frame.
Insulation: Provides a better seal between the fireplace face and the door frame.
