Screens for large stacked stone fireplace - Project #11503
Customer Request: Pilgrim Boston Spark Guard
Our Comments: Boston spark guards and other similar free standing screens provide excellent spark protection and fire viewing, but they can be cumbersome and messy as they must be moved aside and set on the wood floor when tending the fire. We have created mockups showing a variety of options for large fireplaces. Those with doors or mesh curtains are the most convenient since they do not need to be set aside to access the fireplace. Andirons are commonly used with larger fireplaces for a more authentic period design, so we have included them in some of our mockups.
Fireplace Opening: 54 1/2" W x 44" H
Note: These mock-ups are not to scale and are meant to help you choose the model of your screen or door, not the finish. Although we may create a general representation of black, iron, bronze, gold and silver tones, you must choose your finish from our samples using the links below. Ask your project manager which samples apply to the items in your project.

Boston Spark Guard
Boston spark guards are popular for large fireplaces. They provide excellent spark protection and fire viewing but are inconvenient when tending the fire.
Single Panel Screens
Single panels screens provide excellent spark protection and fire viewing but must be set aside to tend the fire.

Gate Mesh Doors
Gate mesh doors are very convenient since they simply open and close. These can be made with two large doors, or with fixed side panels and one single large door for an unobstructed view of the fire.

Mesh Curtains
Mesh curtains are one of the most convenient types of fireplace screens for a large fireplaces. These can be made as a single top bar to hold the curtain rod and mesh or as a full frame. The top bar is best accompanied by a matching bottom bar to help prevent logs from rolling out of the fireplace. Framed screens provide a more finished look and inherently have a bottom bar, but they are more costly.

Mesh & Insulation Options
The Mesh options are behind the glass so you can burn the fire with the doors open and still have spark protection. Great for real wood or gas logs since most gas long manufacturers insist that you have a screen in front of the logs when they are burning. Mesh panel doors are the most popular and are best for when there are toddlers present because they will not open backwards whereas the mesh screens are easily pushed in. Insulation goes between the back of the frame and the fireplace facing, providing a better seal.
