G4 and GX4 Burners

G4 Burner shown with optional SPK-26 Safety Pilot

The G4 is the standard single tube wedge shaped gas log burner made by R. H. Peterson that set the original industry standard for how gas logs burn many years ago. The GX4 burner is the same as the G4, but has a thicker heavier grate for larger log sets and for all log sets over 30". This is the least expensive burner Peterson makes, yet it still produces a very realistic fire. For an additional $35 you can get the newer G45 Triple T Burner that comes with a second burner tube designed to provide more flames to the embers. The introduction of the G45 burner has put the G4 on the back shelf, but for those who want to save every penny, here's a little secret that can save you that $35 without compromising the look of your fire.

Here's A Little Secret

You can get the G4 to burn as if it had a front flame burner like the G45. All you have to do is position the burner slightly forward so that the burner tube is directly beneath...or slightly toward the front of the bottom "front" log. Most people position the burner right in the middle of the logs, which puts the glowing embers underneath the logs and makes most of the flames go right up between the logs with almost no flames coming up around the front log. Moving the burner forward will give you a nicer bed of glowing embers and cause the flames to lap up around both sides of the front log...which looks just as though a front flame burner was installed. There, we just saved you $35!

Approval

For sizes 30" and smaller, you can purchase the G4 or GX4 burner system in a RADCO approved (match-light) setup. If you purchase a RADCO approved set and add a safety pilot, the safety pilot will be shipped separately and you will have to install it yourself. If you need an ANSI approved burner or wish to have the factory install a safety pilot, they no longer do this for G4 burners, so you will need to purchase a G45 or G46 burner if you must have ANSI approval. The G45 burner has no approval rating in sizes that are 36" and larger.

Available Sizes

16", 18", 19", 20", 24", 30", 36", 42", 48", 60"

Downside: Since the safety pilots and remote control systems are attached to the side or end of the G4 burner, they will require an additional 8 to 10 inches of clearance to "Each Side" of your log set, which can dramatically reduce the size logs that you can use...which is why we recommend the G46 burner if you are using a remote control. The SPK-26 manual safety pilot only adds an additional 3" to each side of the burner, so the a G4 burner with an SPK-26 safety pilot is still an excellent choice.

Control Options

You can choose from a basic SPK manual safety pilot, APK-11 Remote control, APK-15 or APK-17 Variable Flame Remote or the EPK-02 Electronic Ignition system. However, since the safety pilots and remote control systems are attached to the side or end of the G45 burner, they will require an additional 8 to 10 inches of clearance to "Each Side" of your log set, which can dramatically reduce the size logs that you can use...which is why we recommend the G46 burner if you are using a remote control. The SPK-26 manual safety pilot only adds an additional 3" to each side of the burner, so the a G45 burner with an SPK-26 safety pilot is still an excellent choice.
