Here are the Minimum Ceiling Heights required for each downrod available for this fan. Each length will put the fan blades 7 feet from the floor, so if you want your fan blades higher than 7 feet, choose a shorter downrod to fit your needs.

How the above calculations are performed

To calculate the length of downrod that you need to get as close to 7 feet from the floor as possible (but not lower), first you must look at the dimensions of the fan to determine how far from the ceiling the blades will hang using the standard mounting hardware. In most cases, the hardware that a ceiling fan ships with is all you need for an 8 or 9 foot high ceiling...but be sure to double check the distance a fan hangs from the ceiling because some fans hang down more than 18" and will require at least a 9 or 10 foot ceiling.

Once you know how far the fan hangs with the standard mounting hardware you can calculate how far it will hang with a longer downrod by subtracting the length of the standard downrod from the length of a longer downrod. Add that length to the distance the fan normally hangs from the ceiling to determine how far down your fan will hang with any particular downrod length. If you do not know the length of the downrod that is included with you can figure that 4" is about average.

How does the Minka Aire Light Wave in Distressed Koa Compare to the Average Ceiling Fan?

Note The Editor's Review is based on the latest product specifications and performance data we have in our database directly from the manufacturer. We take this information and convert it into laymans terms to give you an idea of what you can expect from the fan. Actual performance may vary depending on the circumstances of your application such as room size, ceiling height, blade selection and climate.

Quality Rating = 4 (average is 3)
A Quality Rating of 4 is above average, the Minka Aire Light Wave in Distressed Koa ceiling fan will run smooth and quiet and will give you many years of operation with no worries of the motor burning out.

Wind Speed Factor: 2.58 MPH (average is about 3)
A Wind Speed Factor of 2.58 MPH gives this fan a Breeze Rating of 3 out of 5. This is rather average when it comes to ceiling fans, so you will feel some cooling breeze, but don't expect the Light Wave to blow your socks off. Aside from Quality, which accounts for smooth quiet operation and durability, the amount of wind-chill a fan can provide to cool you off is the most important consideration.

Airflow = 4453 CFM (average is about 5,000)
4453 CFM is below average, so don't expect to feel much of a breeze from this fan unless you are directly beneath it. Fans with this low of a CFM rating will not provide enough breeze for larger rooms. If you are concerned about whether or not the Minka Aire Light Wave in Distressed Koa will move enough air for your needs, please give us a call and we will help you make the determination. This fan may not allow you to raise your thermostat, so do not expect to save much on your cooling bills (if you have AC).

Efficiency Rating = 68 CFM/Watt (average is about 86)
An Efficiency Rating of 68 is below average. Efficiency is defined by the EPA as the amount of airflow a fan produces (CFM) divided by the amount of electricity (Watts) it uses on high speed without any lights on. Efficiency is less important than Airflow because more CFMs allow you to raise your thermostat higher...which is where you will save the most energy. Efficiency becomes more important if you expect to operate several ceiling fans at the same time. (see calculator below)

Electrical Usage = 65 Watts (average is about 76)
65 Watts per hour is slightly below average, which is a good thing. the Minka Aire Light Wave in Distressed Koa will cost a little less to operate than the average ceiling fan. Use the calculator below to estimate just how much it will cost to operate this fan in "Your home".

Wind Speed Factor -vs- Efficiency: Wind Speed is KING! Ceiling fans can save you a lot on your energy bills if you use them properly to reduce your use of central air. Ceiling fans cool you off by creating a wind-chill effect, so the more wind speed a fan generates, the cooler it will make you feel. The cooler your ceiling fan can make you feel, the higher you can raise your AC thermostat to conserve energy without sacrificing your level of comfort. Raising your thermostat by 10 degrees can save you up to 40% on your cooling bills, but you cannot raise your thermostat by 10 degrees if you focus only on ceiling fans that use less energy rather than ones that generate higher wind speed. To put this in perspective: A typical central air system uses about 3500 Watts when it is running, so if a ceiling fan that uses 100 watts allows you to raise your thermostat a couple degrees higher than a more "efficient" fan that uses only 50 watts, the savings you will get by raising your AC thermostat a couple degrees higher is far more than the difference of 50 watts between the two fans. With that said, a ceiling fan that uses less watts yet produces higher wind speed is a win-win.

I have seen reviews that this is extremely loud. Do you agree?
Jess C on Apr 17, 2018
BEST ANSWER: If you are talking about motor noise such as humming, buzzing or clicking noises, then I would disagree...the fan runs very quiet. If you are talking about noise from the actual airflow, as with any high performance fan, the Wave will make some audible wind noise on high speed simply because it is moving a lot of air. This is not very noticeable on medium and low speed. It is also true that 3 blade fans make more wind noise than 5 blade fans. If you are really concerned about getting the least amount of wind noise from your fan you may want to consider the Artemis, which is a similar style fan that has 5 blades (or more). The Artemis is quite a bit pricier, but it also includes a DC motor which is super efficient and is the absolute top of the line for Minka Aire.

Looking at this fan .can it be. l mounted on a sloping ceiling ?
Stephen Hall on Jun 3, 2020

Most Minka Aire ceiling fans, including the Light Wave, can hang on a sloped ceiling up to 21 degrees using the standard hardware included in the box. If your ceiling is sloped more than 21 degrees, you can purchase a sloped ceiling adapter that will handle up to 45 degrees. Just click on the Accessories button and add it to your fan.
Can the Artemis Wave fan be installed without the 6” downrod (more flush mount for shorter ceilings)?
Amber B on Mar 3, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Hello Amber,

I had to edit my previous response after speaking with a second technician who gave me better information. Bottom line is, the included 6" downrod is the shortest downrod recommended by the manufacturer. In order to use the 3" downrod, you must remove the canopy that is on the top of the fan motor which will allow dust and foreign objects to come in direct contact with the inner workings of the fan. Although this can be done, it is not condoned by the manufacturer and will void the warranty.
Alexa Integration? If any how and what to use. Luthron Caseta Wireless PD-6WCL introduced a very loud hum. I disconnected. I wanted to integrate my fans ( I bought 2 ) with Alexas. Thank you for any help.
kadosh on Jan 9, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Sorry, these fans are not tested with or designed to use any aftermarket components that will make it work with Alexa and we have no suggestions on how to do so at this time.

Super quiet, attractive & breeze-rating is also 5 stars! Would definitely recommend - we installed in our foyer, but this Minka Aire could definitely be effective in a larger area.

Art and function
I had this fan put up about a month ago and I love it. It is so sleek and graceful looking and moves the air really well. With the light being integrated, it's much less intrusive then the fixtures that hang down. I'd buy it again in a N.Y. minute.
