Project 10100 - Fireplace Door for Brick Fireplace with Hood

This is a somewhat large brick fireplace with a smoke hood installed. The existence of a smoke hood usually indicates that the fireplace does not draft well, so the hood shortens the opening height allowing for a better draft. When replacing a smoke hood with a fireplace door it is important to maintain the lower opening height, otherwise you will run the risk of reducing the draft and reintroducing a smoking problem. So we custom designed several doors to have a wider frame at the top to mimic the hood so that the doors can be burned either open or closed without worry about smoke. We have also shown options with or without mesh panel backup doors. We recommend the mesh panel backup doors so that you have the choice of burning the fire with the doors open or closed and still have spark protection. These types of doors are custom made and laser cut from a solid sheet of 3/16" thick steel, so they are on the higher end price wise.

The last option we included is the Bungalow door which is an aluminum door with the widest frame available. That frame is only 3 1/2" wide and must overlap the top by about 1", so the amount of frame that reduces the opening height is only about 2 1/2". This is likely not enough to reduce the smoke, but it is the best option for a less expensive door without customizing the frame width. We have included links to each of the doors beneath each picture so you can get an idea what the prices and options are.

Note: These mock-ups are not to scale and are meant to help you choose the model of your screen or door, not the finish. Although we may create a general representation of black, iron, bronze, gold and silver tones, you must choose your finish from our samples using the links below. Ask your project manager which samples apply to the items in your project.

Mesh & Insulation Options

The Mesh options are behind the glass so you can burn the fire with the doors open and still have spark protection. Great for real wood or gas logs since most gas long manufacturers insist that you have a screen in front of the logs when they are burning. Mesh panel doors are the most popular and are best for when there are toddlers present because they will not open backwards whereas the mesh screens are easily pushed in. Insulation goes between the back of the frame and the fireplace facing, providing a better seal.

Black Mesh Curtains - These slide back and forth on a rod behind the glass
Gate Mesh Doors - These are separate doors behind the glass that have a flat wire mesh and a black frame.
Insulation: Provides a better seal between the fireplace face and the door frame.
