Project 10183 - Glass Doors for Tall Opening
Our Comments: Judging from the large smoke deflector/hood over the opening, we assume that this fireplace had a smoke problem before the hood was installed. This is common with older fireplaces that have very tall openings. In order to design a glass door that will help prevent the smoke from rolling into the room, we need to design it with a wide top frame to mimic the hood as shown in the first example below. If you remove the hood and burn the fire to determine that it will draft properly without the hood, then it is possible it was put in place as a purely decorative option. Before you purchase a door like the other examples below, be sure that you confirm the fireplace will not smoke without the hood. For sake of creating these examples, we have removed the hood digitally.
Our Comments: The most durable frame would be made of steel with a powder coat finish. The frame would fit inside the opening and the gap between the stone and the frame will need to be filled with mortar as shown.

Mesh & Insulation Options
The Mesh options are behind the glass so you can burn the fire with the doors open and still have spark protection. Great for real wood or gas logs since most gas long manufacturers insist that you have a screen in front of the logs when they are burning. Mesh panel doors are the most popular and are best for when there are toddlers present because they will not open backwards whereas the mesh screens are easily pushed in. Insulation goes between the back of the frame and the fireplace facing, providing a better seal.
Black Mesh Curtains - These slide back and forth on a rod behind the glass
Gate Mesh Doors - These are separate doors behind the glass that have a flat wire mesh and a black frame.
Insulation: Provides a better seal between the fireplace face and the door frame.
