Project 10267 - Glass Doors for Hole In Wall Marble Fireplace
Customer Comments: I have attached photos of the current fireplace. The dimensions of the current fireplace are: Outer metal box dimensions: 40"x32". Size of the fireplace door opening: 36"x 20". Our granite slab will have cut-outs for the fireplace and TV mounts and will be attached directly to the wall. The sheet rock is 1/2" thick, the Granite is 3/4" thick and the adhesive to attach the Granite will be approx. 1/4" thick. The front of the current fireplace face will be approx. 1.5" inset from the face of the Granite once it is installed. We would like the front of the fireplace door to be flush or inset from the front of the Granite face. We would like to use the Moderne Slim fireplace door and would prefer to use the single pane door if we can operate the gas fireplace with the door closed, otherwise we are ok with a bi-fold door. We are leaning to using a powered back frame finish, but are open to suggestions. The Granite is Azul blue (relatively dark). I have attached a picture as well. We would appreciate you help in designing the doors for us to insure that they will open correctly inset into the Granite slab.
Our Comments: We have taken the liberty of creating what you have described from the picture you supplied. The only issue that we have with your request is where the doors are positioned relative to the granite face. The doors must only be installed directly overlapping the black metal of the fireplace. This is a restriction that is necessary to meet safety standards for doors made for prefabricated fireplaces. Heat cannot be allowed to build up behind the granite and transferred directly to the drywall, it can create a fire hazard. So, the doors will end up being recessed in the granite opening and there will need to be a clean marble return around the opening if the backing would otherwise be exposed. It is not safe to burn gas logs behind closed fireplace door, so we have provided the bifold option in our mockups. We will also need to make the exposed outer frame at least 1" wide in order to allow the hinges to work properly and the doors to swing out past 90 degrees. Otherwise the doors being recessed in the granite opening would be hindered from opening wide enough by the granite.
Door Specifications: Make For Opening Size of: 35 3/4" W x 19 3/4" H (We deduct 1/8" from each side of your actual opening to ensure there is room for play and the installation is easy). We will specify that the exposed outer frame is 1" beyond the door panels as mentioned above. We will make the door overlap the metal opening on all 4 sides. The door will need to be installed before you specify the cutout for the granite so it can be measured accurately on the job.
