Project 10352 - Glass Door for ZC Fireplace With Stone

Customer Comments:Hi, I'm looking for some help with adding glass doors to our wood-burning fireplace. From the research I've done, we have pre-fab ZC fireplace, and here are the dimensions:

Full fireplace dimension (black metal frame): 38" wide x 30" high
Fire box opening: 36" wide x 19" high
The firebox is 16" deep, including the 2" metal lip in front.

The stone surround comes out another 6" from the front of the fireplace. Due to this deep inset, it makes the fireplace appear small and unassuming. We are really hoping there is a product you have that can bring the doors out to the front of the stone, rather than simply attaching on the fireplace, inset within the stone. I have attached a few photos for you. Please let me know what you have available, and how complex the installation would be.

Our Comments: We cannot add a fireplace glass door to a prefab fireplace that goes over the stone. The doors must either directly overlap the black metal or fit inside the opening. Any gaps between mortar joints and the fireplace frame creates heat build-up and causes that heat to transfer right through the mortar joints into the wood framing materials used to construct the fireplace. Some who sell fireplace doors will not tell you this and you may end up with a potential fire hazard if you do not abide by this rule.

So, the example below shows the Legend ZC Deluxe that has a frame that covers all the black metal with a decorative pattern so it is not so stark.

Another option, if you really want the doors up closer to the face of the stone is to use wire mesh doors instead of glass. Then there is no heat build-up and we can put the door wherever you want it. However, that application requires a lot more work because it still needs to fit inside the front of the stone opening, so the gaps between the frame and the stones will need to be filled with mortar.

Fireplace Opening: 38" W x 30" H

Note: These mock-ups are not to scale and are meant to help you choose the model of your screen or door, not the finish. Although we may create a general representation of black, iron, bronze, gold and silver tones, you must choose your finish from our samples using the links below. Ask your project manager which samples apply to the items in your project.

These doors are made from a 3/16" thick solid steel plate laser cut to perfect precision. Heavy duty and durable to last many years.

Aluminum Frame

These doors are pieced together from aluminum extrusions. This material is less expensive than steel or solid brass, yet the finish holds up well to heat. These are the most affordable good quality custom doors.

Mesh & Insulation Options

The Mesh options are behind the glass so you can burn the fire with the doors open and still have spark protection. Great for real wood or gas logs since most gas long manufacturers insist that you have a screen in front of the logs when they are burning. Mesh panel doors are the most popular and are best for when there are toddlers present because they will not open backwards whereas the mesh screens are easily pushed in. Insulation goes between the back of the frame and the fireplace facing, providing a better seal.

Black Mesh Curtains - These slide back and forth on a rod behind the glass
Gate Mesh Doors - These are separate doors behind the glass that have a flat wire mesh and a black frame.
Insulation: Provides a better seal between the fireplace face and the door frame.
