Project #10540 - Glass Doors for See Through Arched Fireplace

Customer Comments: Good Morning - I'm looking for two sets of glass doors for a see-through fireplace. What I really need to know is if you can build doors this large and what they would cost. I'd also like to know who air-tight the doors are. Whoever built this house built the fireplace too tall for its depth, which has resulted in a smoking problem. Let me know if you have any questions.

Our Comments: We can certainly make doors to fit for your fireplace. There are several ways to approach this and the prices are all over the place depending on your style and budget.

The size of your fireplace is right on the edge of being too large for 4 panes of glass. Normally, we do not make any single pane of glass more than 4 square feet. Made as a normal standard arch door, the center two glass panes would exceed that limitation.

There are several ways to overcome this issue:

  1. Make the frame wider, which makes the glass smaller (see Option #1 below).
  2. Convert the arch to a rectangle (see option #2 below)
  3. Add fixed end panels (see option #3 below)

Option #2 is highly recommended because it will reduce the opening height significantly, which will increase the odds that you can burn the fire with the doors open with less or no smoke.

There are many options to each of these designs, so price will vary dramatically based on the materials and finished used in the final design. We will provide estimates for these options separately in an email.

Fireplace Opening: Side 1: 54 7/8" W x 34-44 1/2" H
Side 2: 54 5/8" W x 33 1/2-44 1/4" H

Note: These mock-ups are not to scale and are meant to help you choose the model of your screen or door, not the finish. Although we may create a general representation of black, iron, bronze, gold and silver tones, you must choose your finish from our samples using the links below. Ask your project manager which samples apply to the items in your project.

Mesh & Insulation Options

The Mesh options are behind the glass so you can burn the fire with the doors open and still have spark protection. Great for real wood or gas logs since most gas long manufacturers insist that you have a screen in front of the logs when they are burning. Mesh panel doors are the most popular and are best for when there are toddlers present because they will not open backwards whereas the mesh screens are easily pushed in. Insulation goes between the back of the frame and the fireplace facing, providing a better seal.

Black Mesh Curtains - These slide back and forth on a rod behind the glass
Gate Mesh Doors - These are separate doors behind the glass that have a flat wire mesh and a black frame.
Insulation: Provides a better seal between the fireplace face and the door frame.
