Project #10669 - Glass Doors for Fireplace
Customer Comments: Interested in Project #10637, Option #1, Stiletto cutback frame for a masonary fireplace. opening is 25 3/4 H x 32 W. Bricks across the top are the same distance out as the sides. The floor of the firebox is 1 inch lower then the top surface of hearth. Fire box width is 32 1/4 tight at the top. From the top surface of the hearth to bottom of the brick a across the top is 27 inches.
Our Comments: Many people like the thin frame of the Stiletto Cutback and want it for their fireplace. However, this door is really designed for very flat smooth perfectly square surfaces like the Marble you see in Project #10637. The frame only overlaps the opening about 1/4".
Your fireplace has unusually large mortar joints that are well over 1/4", so when installed on the outside it won’t even be enough overlap to cover the mortar joints. So it will look odd. The only way I would recommend using this door is to fit it inside the opening and fill in the gaps with mortar (see Option #1).
Otherwise, we suggest a door with a wider frame. We also noticed there are blobs of mortar about 2" out from the opening, likely there to help seal the mortar joints when another glass door had been installed. So it might be wise to have an even wider frame that covers those to take advantage of them and hide them as in some of the examples below.

Low End Aluminum Doors
Aluminum is an excellent material for fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle high temperatures when treated with powder coated finishes. It is also the most affordable.
Medium Range Steel Doors
Steel doors are more substantial than the less expensive aluminum doors. They are heavy duty and rugged and are more customizable because the frames are laser cut.
High End Hand Crafted Wrought Iron/Steel Doors
Hand crafted doors take on a more rugged natural look for those who appreciate craftsmanship tasteful details.
High End Hand Crafted Solid Brass
These doors are hand crafted by skilled artisans from Solid Brass or Steel, depending on the finish that is desired. Very high end, and very refined. Items made from solid brass come in a wide variety of hand crafted patinas and other finishes. Satin Nickel finishes done on solid brass are the finest quality and will not rust like plated steel.
