Project #10670 - Screens for Corner Fireplace

Customer Comments: Ideally I’d like a removable screen in black which would sit on the raised rim of the fireplace and wrap around the corner outside of the black support post. I’d prefer not to use glass or anything solid which would likely prevent the chimney from drawing properly.

Our Comments: We can make a two fold screen as you are suggesting, but It will be awkward and unstable. We suggest several other alternatives that are more stable and convenient, such as free standing screen doors, attached screen doors, sliding mesh curtains or glass doors.

Regarding glass doors: They are ultimately the best solution and rather than decrease the draft, they can potentially increase the draft and eliminate smoke problems. Open ended fireplaces like yours have a tendency to draft poorly because air flows across the fire from one side out the other and can cause puffs of smoke to come into the room. So by having glass doors, you can leave the short side closed and open the long side while burning a fire to improve the draft. You can also burn the fire with the doors closed, and you will be surprised at how well it drafts that way as well. There is a draft assembly at the bottom that allows air to flow into the bottom of the fire, so it burns more efficiently. The glass doors can have mesh doors behind them. It is also nice to be able to seal off the fireplace as the fire is dying down since you must leave the damper open all night.

Regarding the mockups: We cannot easily create mockups from the corner angle. Each of these would have a matching return side that can either open or be stationary.

Note: These mock-ups are not to scale and are meant to help you choose the model of your screen or door, not the finish. Although we may create a general representation of black, iron, bronze, gold and silver tones, you must choose your finish from our samples using the links below. Mesh & Insulation Options

The Mesh options are behind the glass so you can burn the fire with the doors open and still have spark protection. Great for real wood or gas logs since most gas long manufacturers insist that you have a screen in front of the logs when they are burning. Mesh panel doors are the most popular and are best for when there are toddlers present because they will not open backwards whereas the mesh screens are easily pushed in. Insulation goes between the back of the frame and the fireplace facing, providing a better seal.

Black Mesh Curtains - These slide back and forth on a rod behind the glass
Gate Mesh Doors - These are separate doors behind the glass that have a flat wire mesh and a black frame.
Insulation: Provides a better seal between the fireplace face and the door frame.
