Project #10835 - Glass Doors for Fireplace

Customer Comments: We would like to purchase a new fireplace door. We are looking at the Essex Masonry Fireplace Glass Door with:
- Bi-fold doors
- Clear glass
- No mesh and no mesh gate, just glass
- Approximately 34" wide by 28" tall
- Pictures attached
- Operable draft vents at bottom
- Square handle
- Bronze burst or dark pewter

Would like to see what it would look like in our pictures and get better measuring instructions.

Our Comments: We have many options for fireplace doors that will work with your fireplace, but the Essex is likely not the best choice. The frame is very narrow, so it can only overlap the opening 1/2" at the smallest point. Please take a look at the Picture of the Lintel below along with the further details mentioned there.

With that said, we have gone ahead and crated a mockup of the Essex door as requested along with other doors that we recommend. The Dark Pewter and Bronze Burst finishes are difficult to replicate in these mockups as they are somewhat reflective metallic finishes. So they look quite different from every angle. If you do not want a reflective finish, we suggest Classic Bronze for a dark bronze color as shown in the mockup of the Carolina door. We also included one door that fits inside the fireplace. This door cannot be burned with the doors closed and does not have a bottom vent, so we included mesh curtains.

Fireplace Opening: 34" W x 28" H

Lintel

Lintel - The red lines show how the lintel appears to be about 1/2" or so lower than the top row of bricks. The Essex door and other steel doors have a metal sub-frame that projects back into the fireplace 1 1/2". The most the Essex door can overlap the lintel is 1/2". So we believe the Essex door will not overlap the top row of bricks and leave a small gap. This may appear as though the door does not fit your fireplace, so we do not recommend it for this application. Other steel doors such as the Legend and Carolina have a 1 1/2" wide frame that allows for 3/4" overlap with about 1/4" room for play. Those doors would overlap the top by 1/2", which is sufficient. We would not suggest doors that have a frame less than 1 1/2" wide except fo the last door that fits inside and has no frame on the sides at all.

Mesh & Insulation Options

The Mesh options are behind the glass so you can burn the fire with the doors open and still have spark protection. Great for real wood or gas logs since most gas long manufacturers insist that you have a screen in front of the logs when they are burning. Mesh panel doors are the most popular and are best for when there are toddlers present because they will not open backwards whereas the mesh screens are easily pushed in. Insulation goes between the back of the frame and the fireplace facing, providing a better seal.

Black Mesh Curtains - These slide back and forth on a rod behind the glass
Gate Mesh Doors - These are separate doors behind the glass that have a flat wire mesh and a black frame.
Insulation: Provides a better seal between the fireplace face and the door frame.
