Project #10949 - Free Standing Mesh Fireplace Doors and Glass Doors

Customer Comments: We are converting this gas fireplace to wood burning and want a mesh cover to go in front with doors that open for easy access to put wood inside, are looking for something footed that would not require any bolting on the inside, etc. dimensions are 32 1/2 in to top of current cover, 52 1/2 in wide, inside of hole is 49 inches. Obviously existing door goes away. It does not need to be an elaborate design, want all mesh so heat can get out. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Our Comments: Free standing screen doors can that are larger than 40 x 30 require fixed side panels as shown in the mockups below, otherwise the screen becomes unstable when you open the doors and can fall over. Because your height is slightly over the limit we overcome this by making the top frame a little wider to keep the doors under 30" tall. We understand you requested a screen that does not need to be attached to the fireplace, but we do recommend something attached with a fireplace this large simply for the added stability. We realize you already have glass doors, but we have added a couple you might prefer over the ones you have. The glass doors can have mesh doors behind them just like the free standing scree, but they provide a much better view of the fire without the fixed end panels. You can burn the fire with the doors open and enjoy the heat then close the doors as the fire dies out so you can keep all that heat in the room overnight.

Fireplace Opening: 49" W x 32 1/2" H

Note: These mock-ups are not to scale and are meant to help you choose the model of your screen or door, not the finish. Although we may create a general representation of black, iron, bronze, gold and silver tones, you must choose your finish from our samples using the links below. Free Standing Fireplace Screens with Doors

Free standing screen doors can that are larger than 40 x 30 require fixed side panels. When the doors are made larger, the screen becomes unstable and will fall over when you open the doors. In this case, the height is also slightly over the limit, so we overcome this by making the frame a little wider at the top so the doors themselves are less than 30" tall. Low End Aluminum Glass Doors

Aluminum is an excellent material for fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle high temperatures when treated with powder coated finishes. It is also the most affordable.

Medium Range Steel Glass Doors

Steel doors are more substantial than the less expensive aluminum doors. They are heavy duty and rugged and are more customizable because the frames are laser cut.

Mesh & Insulation Options

The Mesh options are behind the glass so you can burn the fire with the doors open and still have spark protection. Great for real wood or gas logs since most gas long manufacturers insist that you have a screen in front of the logs when they are burning. Mesh panel doors are the most popular and are best for when there are toddlers present because they will not open backwards whereas the mesh screens are easily pushed in. Insulation goes between the back of the frame and the fireplace facing, providing a better seal.

Black Mesh Curtains - These slide back and forth on a rod behind the glass
Gate Mesh Doors - These are separate doors behind the glass that have a flat wire mesh and a black frame.
Insulation: Provides a better seal between the fireplace face and the door frame.
